Honoring Tony next season would be risky/ tough. Better to say good bye now, even though he quit on the team only 3 weeks before the season began. Bottom line- odds are that UVA goes in a much different direction next season, with a new roster and coach. Giving Tony his due now is appropriate for what he was able to achieve in his career. Remember we will always have 2019.

Yeah, that’s where my brain has landed. We had to do something and this season probably makes the most sense.
Would love something in ten years or so that has more of the former players, esp natty era, but that will come, I’m sure.
I think the story said that the GT game is also Alumni Day for MBB (not sure if that was already scheduled or if they decided that in tandem with the TB ceremony), so there should be some there. But generally agree.

I feel like this is a money grab, fundraising attempt. Boost up one of the games that was going to be lowly attended and hopefully it makes a financial impact.
Other games like UNC, Tech and dook will be highly attended already.

to me first game of next season woulda made more sense. new coach with fans excited for the start of a new season, great time to honor the past.

I just realized that five of our first six ACC games are against schools that weren’t in the conference in 2014 — four of them against schools that weren’t in the league in spring 2024!

On doing it next season: It would have been a little awkward when Dean and Markel Families Coach Porter Moser shows TB how he ripped down the 5 Pillars to replace with his Culture Wall, and TB is like “Why does it say ‘White’ up there?”

It is a bit awkward, but it was either this season or a later date that would be more uncomfortable. I think Tony’s a lot like his dad, and will coach again (elsewhere) in a few years once he starts to get antsy.

i don’t think he coaches again. Tony will put his energy elsewhere. Never thought of him as a coaching junky…I think he can live without it unlike other coaches out there.
But there will be speculation every time a high major job opens that Tony Bennett is a candidate. Bill Cowher was like that for a while but he never stepped back in.
