🏀 2024/25 Virginia Men's Hoops In-Season Thread

Makes it easier to tell Left from Right when you’re in a hurry.

Not only Rohde’s boot, and Ames’s mismatched shoes, but Kyle got his socks pulled up over his pants.

I hope right after this pic was taken Ralph turned to Power and said “Last time I played Duke we won by 43” then walked off.

If Power had been on that Duke team, we would have won by 83.

I hope Kyle rode his bike to work and got there just in time for the picture.

Yup, that’s the look

Man I’m sure Ralph has shrunk a few in his old age but look how much taller he still is lmao

Maybe Kyle has a flea infestation at home.

Offense is starting to come around.

Last three games:

FG%: 52.9%
2P%: 61.6%
3P%: 42.0%
EFG%: 62.3%
3PA/FGA: 44.5%
PPS: 1.48
FT%: 73.5%

Last five games:

FG%: 50.0%
2P%: 60.7%
3P%: 44.6%
EFG%: 59.5%
3PA/FGA: 42.7%
PPS: 1.38
FT%: 73.5%

Shooting 13-34 from 2 vs. ND was the only real blemish; 8-23 from 3 vs. VPI would be second — we lost both.

First game since BC that the offense and defense both really came around at the same time. Against ND we were pretty bad on both ends efficiency-wise, Miami and VT we had good offense but mediocre/abysmal defense respectively. Tonight was our highest offensive rating and 4th highest defensive rating of the season.

Need to keep it going though, up to this point we haven’t strung together back to back good/great performances, so far it’s been a quality outing and then a blowout. Got two winnable games coming up and then a rough four game stretch (at least in terms of the ACC) with Duke/@UNC/@Wake/Clemson right after that. Can’t follow this up with consecutive letdowns if we wanna make the ACC tourney, which at this point should be the goal for the season.

Getting that 2P efficiency has been a pleasant surprise. Good Blake and ARob games in this stretch, and then a little bit of picking names out of hat for a guard making some 2s (Dai Dai has been the big one recently).

When Saunders comes back, what do you want the front court rotation to be?

In the last three games, here are the minutes for the other bigs:
Buchanan: 72.5% (would have been a lot higher, but he only played 15 versus VT because he played about 3 minutes in the first half and got 3 fouls)
Cofie: 57.5%
Robinson: 35.8%
Power: 13.3%

That sums to 191.1% meaning we never played TJ at the three and 9% of minutes we had only one big. (Maybe we did play TJ at the three some, and we had a little more than 9% with only one big.)

My preferred rotation would be minimums:

Buchanan 50%
Cofie 50%
Robinson 25%
Saunders 50%

with the last 25% going to whoever is playing the best (or determined by foul trouble.) Obviously TJ Power should never play another second in a UVA uniform.

Baseline expectation = 20 each, and mix and match in realtime based on hot hand, defense, game flow, etc.

Honestly, they should combine for more than 80, though. Would like to see us go two true bigs + Saunders at times at the three to take advantage of his skillset.

Might bump Cofie to 20 and ARob and Blake both down a tad, but otherwise this looks right, a fairly equal distribution between the four with (a) Saunders having the biggest share as the most versatile defender and (b) zero minutes for Power.

Unless the NCAA ruling on 5 year eligibility hits, I feel like we have a few guys that would benefit from the old school redshirt year. Thinking specifically about Kelly Olynyk at Gonzaga, and how he redshirted mid-career to really change the trajectory of his improvement.

Guys like Buchanan and TJ Power would be wise to consider this. They are 100% gone, but need work with S&C and skill development. Would probably make sense for them to sit a year and improve, with 2 years after that.

Didn’t cost us last night but wow is IMac terrible at handling defensive pressure up top. Seems like he gives up a pick 2 once per game. Other teams wait and literally pounce on him like hyenas. He usually obliges with a tipped pass or ill-advised and ill-measured toss. His 3 ball makes up it but this is an area of obvious development.

I started hammering out an answer and realized it’s kinda tricky. Things I think are true:

  • Cofie is better defending 5s than 4s
  • Saunders is exclusively a 4
  • ARob and Buchanan are more viable together than I initially thought
  • Buchanan might be a better 4 than 5? Kinda bad with Cofie though.

The pairings that look ok-to-good in lineup data are:

  • Cofie - Saunders
  • Buchanan - ARob
  • Buchanan - Saunders
  • Cofie - ARob (extremely small sample size)

Cofie and Buchanan makes sense to me on paper but just seems to not have worked so far.

Cofie seem to be in freshman mid season slump. Gotta play through it
