Also updated the position rankings post, D1 did a top 150 starting pitchers and we had three guys on there.
I wonder how much ESPN makes on the broadcast of a single college baseball game on ESPN+. I’d guess the ads are sold programmatically in blocks of 1000 across all the games, so it’d be hard to attribute ad revenue for a particular game. The host school does the filming and production and supplies the announcers I think. Wonder who pays the talent and the production cost.
Man I am STOKED for the season to start. This is going to be fun.
Three Hoos show up on the Golden Spikes award preseason watchlist. Blanco, Ford, and Didawick.
@BillyHoyle and I had some insightful conversations at the watering hole with someone close to the program. Will let him give the highlights. Bottom line, we good.
Vibes were high on the heels of that hoops win!
Yeah, everyone around the program keeps using the word “loaded.”
I think the three things I took away from the convo:
- This team should finish with single digit losses.
- Ference was apparently option 5 or 6 at the time we recruited him as a transfer. He already had a job lined up after getting his Salisbury degree. Glad he changed his mind.
- Valincius “may be the best pitcher on the roster.Throws a silky 95 as a lefty.”
Is it Friday yet???
On the latest 1186 podcast, Aaron Fitt compared Valincius to Danny Hultzen. He caveated it a bit and noted that Hultzen was a natural comparison because of the two-way lefty stuff, but he didn’t back off too much.
He was Mr. Baseball in Tennessee for his level two seasons in a row. He’s pretty good with the bat too. Will be interesting to see how much we use him as a position player (1B/DH?) and batter during his career.
I think if things go well with the rest of the roster and O’Connor and Hodges are able to give us something upon their return, this does feel like a team that can do some damage in Omaha. Think it’s really going to come down to the bullpen’s effectiveness. And Oak keeps saying how deep it is.
Sounds like no Blanco for us this weekend, same language used as Augustin that he’s hit a snag but should be good for the weekend after.
You just hope it’s not something that lingers long term.
So just to get the game times correct… Puerto Rico is one hour ahead of EST? So the 2 PM AST game time is actually 1 PM EST?
Correct.
Will they be televised?
ESPN+ (probably Hoo TV too)
Thanks!
It’s almost time
Not overly surprising. My thought process throughout the offseason has been that the best way to maximize Arroyo’s talent is to have him play 1st on the weekends and then have him be our top midweek starter on the mound. Just easier for him to get AB’s that way. But with how much praise BOC was consistently giving him as a pitcher it seemed like he had potentially won that Sunday spot (now Saturday with Blanco out at least one weekend).
But Moore was rock solid through the summer and fall, and Valincius has drawn comparisons to Danny Hultzen with his stuff and potential. It’ll be interesting to see which of those two stays in the rotation if/when Blanco reassumes his spot on Fridays.
BOC part of this roundtable. Not a fan of roster limits. Doesn’t seem to think the House settlement will lead to good things.
D1 came out with their preseason NCAAT predictions. Here’s where they have us slotted, #2 seed overall paired in the Supers with Oklahoma State. They have Michigan, who we play in our opening game tomorrow, in Okie State’s bracket as a 3 seed.
