I’d change this to say they’d be WILLING to pay him significantly more.
… but has BOC told TAMU “no” yet?
Will say that I felt significantly better about the situation before going to bed last night. The A&M insider board all but confirmed he was not a candidate for the job, to @UVAdrian ’s credit there was mention of a 90 day buyout clause being very steep in the wake of his extension.
With that being said it’s good to get a definitive answer and move on with no more angst. Honestly this one felt different from other high profile vacancies until it didn’t, there was legitimate concern from me and others close to the program about the lack of reassurance or really anything being rumored before this morning. But turns out it was all just smoke, nothing more, and at the end of the day our guy stayed true to the program he built.
Jmu Mancini in th portal. Would love to snatch him up.
Would take Mancini in a heartbeat even with how crowded our IF is. Gonna be a ton of competition for him though.
So now with all of that out of the way, it’s time to angst about something else: the MLB draft.
We now have eight commits in the top 200 on MLB pipeline’s draft rankings for 2024 with Nunnallee showing up. He’s been creeping up rankings for a while but this is the first time I’ve seen him on this particular list. Also good to see Jay show up at 250th, that would put him firmly in top 10 round territory.
How many you think we lose?
In terms of the HS commits I’d put the O/U at 6.5, read that apparently Nunnallee has a high asking price so am a little more confident in him compared to the others and there’s always a chance we get one more after that.
Am assuming we have no shot at any of Dickerson, Bonemer, Meccage, or TGA, and am not confident in Harris. If we were to land a pitcher I think it would be Kirk and/or Valincius but wouldn’t put money on either one.
Yall think coach oak has an idea on what the HS commits are gonna do?
I think he has a general idea, yeah. He’s definitely been in contact with his commits and gotten a sense of where they’re leaning, can be hard to tell definitively with scouts and prospects working out asking prices right up until the draft day but we’ve for sure been prepping to lose guys from our class based on our transfer portal acquisitions. The numbers will work themselves out regardless.
Thank you! Any more big names for us staying or transfers coming in that are big?
I know ference and the current transfers we got.
With the level of recruits we get…and knowing a number will go pro…how does BOC deal with the numbers…is it always grabbing a kid in the portal…at this point I would think that there is no plan B or C HS candidate…
Outside of the incoming transfers who have already been listed, nah I haven’t seen any new names pop up since Markus from W&M committed.
I think the only other realistic name we can potentially look at as opting out of the draft would be Didawick, but even that seems like a longshot. Would expect all of GOF/Anderson/Saucke/Woolfolk to move on and go pro.
It is typically finding transfers from wherever you can get them if you need to fill out roster spots, though there is the occasional HS commit add via either them being a late bloomer or a coaching change allowing them out of their NLI. For example there’s been a number of highly rated prospects who reopened their commitment following Texas’s firing of David Pierce, not saying we’d be in the race for any of them but there are still options out there.
You can have up to 40 players on your roster in college baseball with up to 32 getting partial scholarships, so there’s room to work with.
The deadline to enter the transfer portal has officially passed. There’s still the possibility that there were some portal entries not documented by 64analytics or D1baseball, but as of right now these are the four confirmed entries from our roster:
RHP Chase Hungate
RHP Cullen McKay
IF Tristan Head (Georgetown)
C Mark Gialluisi (Rutgers)
Honestly didn’t lose as many guys as I thought we would. Figured there would be more from our pitching staff searching for greener pastures along with some position players not seeing a clear path to PT.
Doing some roster math, right now I have us at either 35 or 36 players (depending on the status of one name) if you add in our incoming transfer portal class. I’m expecting us to lose at least five players from our team to the draft (GOF/Saucke/Anderson/Woolfolk/Didawick) which would leave 9 or 10 spots available on our roster for our 14 incoming HS commits. So I would guess the staff is expecting to lose at least 4 or 5 prospects there too, with the potential for upwards of 8. For reference we carried 37 total players on our roster in 2024 out of the 40 maximum that you’re allowed, so it’s not a guarantee we’ll reach the 40 mark even if we have open spots leftover.
Hungate finishing his career at Mississippi State.
If you can beat 'em, join 'em.
A couple of his teammates from VCU played there last year, Conner Hujsak and Tyler Davis (the closer who imploded against us in the last game). Would imagine that plus wanting more NIL were factors in his decision.
