I know it’s early but this pitching staff has no confidence. Blanco might have been the best so far and it wasn’t pretty.

First weekend of the season against a lineup filled with a bunch of seniors and grad transfers. It hasn’t been pretty and we’ll go through our fair share of growing pains, but it’s farrrrrr too early for major concern.

Totally understandable. Just want a pitcher who’s a dog and shuts a team down….

Yea . I dont follow baseball that close until it’s tournament time but the pitching seems to be a problem. The bats aren’t always going to be enough

Bottom of the 7th, RHP Danny Kelleher comes in to pitch for Hofstra. Godbout to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Godbout flies out to McCoy on the warning track in deep LCF for out #1. Nobody on and one out for Whalen.
  • Whalen on a full count slaps a double into the RF corner. Runner on 2nd, one out for GOF.
  • GOF walks on four pitches. Two on, one out for Stephan.
  • Mound visit for Hofstra.
  • Stephan grounds into a 6-3 double play to end the inning.

Heading into the 8th, HOOS lead 11-9.

Top of the 8th, Barker on the mound for the HOOS. Harrington to lead off for Hofstra.

  • Harrington on the first pitch grounds one to Ford who takes it unassisted for the out. Nobody on, one out for McCoy.
  • McCoy on a full count lines a single into CF after fouling off a bunch of pitches. One on, one out for Sealey.
  • Sealey K’s (1) looking for out #2. One on, two outs for Lane.
  • Mound visit for UVA, DD out for a chat.
  • Lane flies out to Saucke in RF to end the frame.

Middle of the 8th, HOOS lead 11-9. Some more insurance runs here would be nice.

Bottom of the 8th, Kelleher still on the mound for Hofstra. Anderson leads off for the HOOS.

  • Ford grounds one to short. The throw is in time but the 1st baseman can’t glove it on a hop. Ford reaches on an E3, one on and one out for Saucke.
  • Saucke chops one to 3rd. The out is recorded at 2nd but the exchange is bobbled, so held to just a FC. One on, two down for Didawick.
  • Didawick lines out to McCoy in CF to end the inning.

Heading into the 9th, HOOS lead 11-9. Let’s close this out.

Appreciate the play-by-play, @UVApride7 . I “watched” the last few innings strictly through your updates

No problem at all, won’t be able to do this for every game but will try to give updates whenever I can. Spring is my favorite time of year for UVA sports.

A look at Ford’s three-run HR from earlier. This kid is one of the more impressive 1st year hitters I’ve seen at UVA, reminds me a bit of Kris Bryant with his stance and size (I know, setting myself up for failure with that high of expectations).

Enjoy watching the baseball team, but don’t follow as closely as hoops or football.

Good to see us start with a sweep. Based on preseason expectations, is this a group expected to challenge in the ACC and possibly get to Omaha?

Don’t we have some big bats to replace?

Yes and yes. We lost Teel/Gelof/O’Donnell but also brought back O’Ferrall/Anderson/Saucke/Stephan/Godbout/Didawick/Hanson for our lineup along with bringing in Henry Ford who looks like he’s gonna be a monster hitter and some quality transfers. Our position depth isn’t just good enough on paper to make it to Omaha, it’s good enough to win a national title.

But this team will only go as far as its pitching staff takes it. This first weekend, to put it bluntly, was ugly. Hofstra has a good, experienced lineup but we’ll see that level of hitting plus significantly better pitching just about every weekend in ACC play. Have to find consistency and it all begins with our SP’s, either O’Connor/Blanco/Woolfolk give us quality outings in their next couple of starts or we try to find other guys who can. Will say there was a few guys who looked the part in relief. Aidan Teel, Blake Barker, Bryson Moore, and Angelo Tonas all did solid in their appearances so that at least gives you some sort of basis to go off of.

We’re gonna find out pretty quickly where we are as a team next weekend. Playing two top 25 caliber teams in Iowa and Auburn, along with Wichita State who won’t be a pushover. Going 2-1 should be the goal, anything more is fantastic and anything less is a disappointment.

Great stuff, thanks!

Did we lose any HS prospects we thought might contribute right away, to the draft?

Yes, we lost Jonny Farmelo who was supposed to be a day-one starter in CF. Was a case that happens with top programs where you recruit a guy and he ends up being too talented, he got drafted in the 1st round so wasn’t a bad decision.

Same thing is gonna happen to this year’s class. Our three highest rated prospects are all very likely to go pro out of HS.
