Yeah, I hope Mangino lands on his feet. I know college sports is having massive upheaval, financial and otherwise. And I hope UVa hoops continues to stay competitive financially.
But I donāt think thereās such a straight line between those 3 items.
Good example of changing offensive environments though: The 2013-14 team had an OReb% of 33.9, which was #86 in the country at the time. That OReb% would have been #36 last season. That team also took 29.7% of its shot attempts from 3, which was #250 at the time and would have been #335 last season.
In general I agree that if youāre gonna kinda suck at shooting, you should hit the glass. And that 2013-14 team was still excellent at transition defense.
Thank you for posting this- what a great team. Really miss that style of play- attacking tough in your face D and offensive talent that found ways to score from all over the court.
Quiet time of year so letās play predictions. Which UVA player will surprise people this season and which one wonāt live up to expectations. Buy 1 Sell 1.
I will buy Ames, sell Power. This is all relative to expectations.
Ames because he was honestly an afterthought last add. Very mixed opinions about whether he should be a take for us. Think heās a very smart, smooth, steady player with great instincts. If he is just 35% from 3, thatās money. Also think he benefits as much as anyone from alleged offense changes.
Think Power will be great for us long term, but wouldnāt be shocked if heās mainly a stationary shooter off the bench for us this upcoming year. I think Power is basically Groves this year with the upside to become a Hauser type down the road.
Runner up for buy- Rohde. Think heās a 8th man rotational guy who is a connector(unlike last year where there was nothing to connect), and shows more as a scorer shooting 35% from 3 and able to create some of his own shots too(in the lane and pull ups off the dribble).
Saunders is excluded from the convo just because thereās so much hype around him. Think heāll be great but itās just too obvious of a pick.
i like the Rohde buy calls. Expect heāll have a solid bounce back. Iāll sell Sharma. Lots of summer hype, and I donāt doubt heāll be good long term. But it gets harder for young guys in the fall, plus just the numbers in front of him make it hard to get much time.
@haney buying Warleyās jumper is the boldest. Iām really curious to see what his shot looks like. They said heās changed it up and it must be unorthodox nowā¦āindescribably uglyā someone told me. An exaggeration probably but I wanna see.
