Random thought: do we have a vocal leader on this team? McKneely seems like the de facto leader but he seems like a soft spoken guy. Kihei was the same way, lead by example not vocally. Feel like we havenât had a vocal leader since BraxtonâŚ? Idk there has to have been one after Ty/ Kyle right?
Not knowing anything⌠but I think Warley and Dai Dai are going to be pretty loud.
I feel like itâs hard to come in and be a vocal leader as a transfer in your first year in the program. Youâre still trying to build rapport and trust with guys youâve only just met.
To be respected by the whole team enough for it to not go poorly when you have to tell them what to do or get in line, I feel like you generally have to have been with them for a while (or just be so good others put their trust in you). Another reason Iâve really not been a huge fan of relying so much on older transfers the past few years.
Iâd say thatâs been one of the biggest issues the program has faced the last 5 years. Since the Ty/KG group left there has not be a vocal leader. The Braxton Huff Mamadi did had enough of it, but Iâd say you can paint at least some of the downfall the past few seasons due to that missing. Agree with @jazznutUVA I think Warley and Dai Dai have those qualities, especially Warley given his experience and skill set. Dai Dai will struggle given he may not even be a starter. I love IMAC but he aintâ that guy unless he learned a whole lot from KG in the last 3 weeks.
The clips that the UVA MBB account posted yesterday make me think that Kyle can fill part of that role even though heâs a coach. Heâs only five years removed from being on in the program, is practicing against the guys every day and is currently finishing his degree (and he won a national championship in the program). He has an older brother, mentor, player development type role and has always been very vocal. I get that he wonât be on the court with the guys but I think he can fill some of that void that wonât be filled by iMac.
Kyle Guy like @alltimeassistleader says
Kihei was absolutely a vocal leader. How effective is up for debate, but it was unquestionably his team for four years.
True, it was Kiheiâs team and I think he grew into the vocal leader role as well. The issue like you said is Iâm not sure how well his teammates responded to that. And that leads me to the question of if youâre a leader but no one is listening or following are you really a leader?
KG would be great but we need someone on the court. Hopefully Imac will take the reins. He needs to be more assertive on and off the court.
ExactlyâŚ. Players respect the best players and alsoâŚ
Yup the leader doesnt have to be the best player but it helps a lot. At the very least they need to be the best at what they do.
Mostly feeling blessed that Iâm an above average backyard basketball player according to this dude
Yeah, ten unguarded lay-ups is not that hard. Who is this guy playing basketball with?
He seems connected so maybe Zay guards him on his
To be fair, if I was playing on grass in the backyard, I would have a hard time dribbling into my layup
Yeah layups on grass into a peach basket lashed to the light pole ainât easy
The game as James Naismith intended
kinda explains why he still gives a lot of NIL money after watching last years offense.
Somehow presently I proly have better chance of making 10 threes in a row than 10 layups
Make it make sense
