5-2!

I’m not going to jinx it just yet but I have a a quick ā€œface of American tennisā€ jab lined up

Phew, she was nails during that 4-2 game. High pressure moment and finding enough offense to get it done.

Man, Coco’s forehand really fell apart. Good job by Emma keeping her poise and continuing to find it over and over again.

Love to see it. Great step forward Anna! Collins having a career year (her final?) as well.

In post-game interview, Emma talked about how important her two years at college were, developing as a player and a person. Great press for the University!

Navarro didn’t choke at the end. Are we sure she really went to uva?

ā€œI don’t have a ton of words,ā€ the 19th-seeded Navarro, 23, said. She grew up in South Carolina and won an NCAA championship for Virginia.

She won a natty at UVa.

She didn’t choke here.

Emma interview after defeating Coco Gauff. She’s so level-headed and self-confident. I could totally see her taking the Wimbledon crown, especially given her path to the final round.

For the stats-inclined, there’s a site that puts together Elo rankings of tennis players, which is probably a little more accurate than the WTA/ATP rankings:

https://tennisabstract.com/reports/wta_elo_ratings.html

They do have surface-specific ratings, which is nice for figuring out matchups.

Emma’s at #17 currently in the overall ratings. Her next opponent (Paolini) is at #12, but actually has a slightly worse grass court-specific rating than Emma, so Tennis Abstract forecasts the matchup as 57/43 in Emma’s favor:

https://www.tennisabstract.com/current/2024WimbledonWomenForecast.html

Looking ahead, the semi-final opponent is either Sun, who made it from qualifiers, or Vekic, who is a strong grass-court player. Vekic is heavily favored against Sun.

The other half of the bracket is tough for Danielle, as Ostapenko (potential QF opponent) is way stronger on grass than her overall ranking would imply, and then Rybakina (SF opponent) is the strongest player left in the field based on ratings.
