šŸˆ 2025/26 College Football Coaching Carousel

Yeah if I’m Lane I take the extra few million and stay put. His son just got the starting job at Oxford high, your kids seem happy. Im not actually sure the ceiling is that much higher at Florida. It definitely is at LSU, but Florida right now is kind of a mess. They’ve got a lot to figure out that Ole Miss already has and you’re not getting relief from the expectations while it gets sorted.

If you do exactly what you’re doing at Ole Miss for 10 more years you probably get a statue. And you can get city grocery shrimp and grits and time you want.

I do think Lane is a good coach! The USC thing seems like it was harder than we realized at the time and FAU was a hard job when he took it! His offenses at bama were better than Sark or BoB’s in my opinion too. I think he’d do well at LSU or Florida. I just don’t think he’ll be spurrier or Saban because those runs aren’t possible anymore.

I think Franklin would do well at Florida too. Ditto Arkansas. Not as sure about LSU and Auburn. Don’t think you can give Franklin the Auburn job with his track record in the big ones. They need a win against bama every couple of years.

I’ve made my peace with the extension and even started talking myself into seeing the bright spots that can turn into a lasting successful program. I still wish he’d fired Des and think we could do better, but I agree we should see what we can build on the foundation of this season. With all the disarray in the sport, stability can be a real asset coming off a good season. There are a lot of good players out there ready to be stolen right now.

But the sport is also filled right now with guys who got way too big of extensions after nice seasons when the rest of their track records told you some thing else and now the programs are really suffering. There are a ton of similarities with the Norvell situation in my eyes. Everything went right with a bunch of transfers in a season where the carousel went crazy so you ended up giving him an insane extension. It was a perfect storm that is brewing again. You had to give it to him, I know, but it wasn’t necessarily the right decision.

cannot STAND Brian Kelly. Josh Pate suggesting they make Kiffin and Marcus Freeman say no, how much of a back breaker would that be for ND? Would NEED a home and home

That’s generally where I am. I rather sit out this round of hiring and ride some stability. It’s worked well if we step back and look at it.

I get the Norvell comparison but it’s a bit of apples to oranges when you look at the programs, expectations and financial situations. I also don’t think there’s a big risk of losing Tony to anyone so there won’t be a lot of pressure to overpay.

Evan the VT 247 insider is cryptically posting this morning in a way that makes it seem like VT might have or be close to having a deal in place with someone. Said they maybe will announce a coach before Thanksgiving. He’s good at posting in a way that drives clicks and views but I wonder if VT got Jimbo or Franklin or possibly a verb deal with a coach who will be fired soon.

Worth mentioning that Elliott’s deal automatically extends by a year if he reaches 10 wins or the ACCCG.

Also a good amount of bonuses this year he’s chasing,

ā€œElliott’s contract will automatically extend if he leads Virginia to an ACC championship appearance or a 10-win season. UVA has experienced only one 10-win season in its football history, in 1989 under George Welsh. Should Elliott take the Cavaliers to an ACC championship game it would add a $50,000 bonus, and a conference title would add $100,000. A bowl game is worth a bonus of $25,000 to $100,000 depending on the bowl, and an appearance in a College Football Playoff game would be worth a $500,000 bonus.

If the Cavaliers finish in the Top 25 rankings, Elliott would receive a $50,000 bonus, while a Top 20 finish would be worth $75,000, Top 15 $100,000, Top 10 $125,000, Top 5 $150,000. ACC coach of the year honors would be an additional $75,000 bonus.ā€

Couple dudes at Hall’s in Charleston last night were saying that boosters were trying to come up with $70 million over 10 years to lure Elliott from Cville. I could not figure out whether they were talking about Clemson or USC.

And I wasn’t sure if it was speculation or real. But a lot of business gets done at the bar at Hall’s.

Those are actually fair bonuses. Funny because when they wrote them in, who actually thought any of them would be reached and now He’s got a chance to activate all of them except for a Top 5 finish and I guess ACC coach of the year.

Also ACC coach of the year a 2 man race between Tony and Brent Key?

I’m cool letting the auto extension kick in and maybe tacking on a couple more years and a pay raise but no increase to the buyout. I’m happy to give him a raise, I just don’t want the buyout number to increase to some unreasonable sum that makes it impossible to move on.

If USC or Clemson wants to take a run at him for that amount of money, I would wish them and him well and send them on their way.

If I’m TE I negotiate my extension and the hiring of a hell if a DBs coach / recruiter. Can only go so far if people can take the top off your defense any given Saturday (and we are lucky it hasn’t killed us yet)

get Tony an extension and Dex on staff

LOVE this idea…. New staff coming to PSU. Maybe Hagans thinks Cville doesn’t look too bad rn either

I mean no shot we repair the relationship with Dex, but it’s worth dreaming about

Hagans, Dex, and a year of good results would be a recipe to get recruiting in VA off the ground

If its Jimbo lol

If they pull of Franklin that is legitimately impressive and I will be kind of scared. If they can lock him up by end of season that is even more impressive. He will be able to hit the ground running and be pretty good pretty quickly.

I don’t know why he would commit now though, there are a lot of better jobs that could open up by then.

This is the understatement of the century!

Exactly where I’m at on all of those points (This isn’t as fun when we agree).

I don’t see Tony or Carla entering cutthroat negations and believe they can hammer out a deal that either adds on to the auto extension or is a straight up one with a pay bump and a respectiable buyout.

If UNC/NCS State Clemson or whoever wanna drop $70mil on Tony God Bless him go get that money and I’ll help him pack the truck and will do it without one drop of atomicity.

Hot Take: I love Dex, but I’m actually okay if he doesn’t come home. I rather see him get the big whistle somewhere else. Start learning the role on the job.

If that’s the case then I highly doubt it’s Franklin. Why would he lock something down at this point instead of waiting out the coaching carousel. He is going to have plenty of options if he even wants to coach next year.

Franklin to VT would be really bad for us imo

They’re the only school other than Ohio State that has three different national championship winning coaches this century. Probably a top three job IMO

hard agree.

I thought Andy Staples made a good point here:

Even when they screw up they screw up pretty well!

Before the season, I said 8 wins needed to extend Tony given the schedule and the importance of being relevant over the next 5 years to conference realignment. I’m still there - I’m not sure I’d be happy with keeping Tony if he drops the remaining schedule. I don’t think he will go o’fer, and I’ll be happy with an extension as long as we finish better than 0-4 from here. He will absolutely have deserved it.

Edit: To be clear, I don’t think he’s getting fired if he finishes 7-5. I’m just saying I won’t be happy about retaining him in that scenario.
