LSU is a great spot. Like everyone has said, they have a recent history of winning, with different coaches etc. They have all the talent you need in their backyard and only out of state challengers to poach it. They are the brand of Louisiana.
The fans are harsh, but if you play nice with them they are pretty damn forgiving. They donātā have typical insane SEC level delusion.
That makes sense. I honestly just donāt see an 0-4 finish. And I donāt have the patience to do the if he losses 3 but beats VT or the other 20 possible scenarios.
I think itās easier to say:
7-5 play it out and see
8+ trigger an extension and the size of that is correlated with how high the win total goes.
I donāt think weāll go 0fer but after this weekend Iām not ruling it out⦠I will be pretty depressed if we lose to VT this year. We cannot lose to a zombie VT team without a coach with our best team in years. Just canāt do it. I will be open to all outcomes if that that happens.
Yeah Franklin will eventually make the playoffs at VT if he goes there. Would immediately upgrade their talent as well. Theyād probably become the 3rd best ACC team overnight behind Miami and Clemson and Clemson doesnāt seem to be doing too well anymore. The controlled silence about Franklin on the VT board makes me a little nervous that might have something going on there
The top SEC jobs donāt seem to be interested in him at all. I think he has a higher ceiling at VT than Arkansas or UCLA or that caliber of job. FSU makes the most sense if itās all about with a national championship like he says but they may not be able to make a move.
Iāll take the bet that Franklin has not put pen to paper with anyone yet. With the number of opening currently available and more on the way, I donāt see any of the big name guys taking their names off the board this early in the game unless itās stupid paper, and I donāt think VT when I think stupid amounts of money.
Thereās zero chance a coach coming off his best season signs an extension without an increase in the buyout. That means no increase in his guaranteed income, why would anyone sign that? Thatās less than they would give a new hire in the position. Thatās telling Elliott that we donāt care that he did well this season, if he doesnāt perform well next season heās getting fired anyway. Thatās basically telling the coach to leave for a new job, which with possibly 20+ P4 openings this year, heāll have opportunities. The new school can always sell it to their fanbase as Virginia sucks/no facilities/support/money/shooting and he just won 9/10/11 games. Weāre better than Virginia so heāll win here too.
Heāll have 2 years and about 9 mil guaranteed after this season. 3/15 if the auto-extension kicks in. I think you pretty much have to push his contract and guarantee out to at least 4-5 years. Any school that hires him would offer him, an experienced P4 coach who oversaw a successful program turnaround, good character, personable guy, good with boosters, at least 5/25 or 5/30. He grew up in SoCal, Iām sure his agent has poked around UCLA. South Carolina is an obvious landing spot too. But if someoneās offering 70/10, yeah Iād pass on matching that too
How much is it worth to not have to completely start over with a new regime when in all likelihood youāre going to have to give a new coach the same 5 years you wouldāve had to give Elliott, possibly more because now youāre dealing with the stigma of being a program that didnāt reward success.
I think Iād put Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Texas and LSU in the top tier without a lot distinguishing them. Which one a coach would take is based on timing and personal preferences probably.
LSU has a great fanbase, only P4 in the state which has loads of high level HS talent every year, but maybe not quite as much money as the other 4.
Thereās some grumbling about the last time the HC job came out that Dex was inline for it or had it and then the school went with Tony instead. I donāt remember the details, I was busy with outside stuff at that time so I donāt know what was real and what isnāt. Honestly Iād blame Hooty for most of it because he was the one carrying water for the Dex has the HC job story.
I donāt know thereās any actual beef between the school and him at this point. Like I said above I love Dex but rather see him take the big whistle at a Group of 5 or some smaller program at this point. Spending another 4 yrs as a DC is not going to improve his ability to be a HC at this point, especially at a program where there will always be a portion of the fanbase pulling for him to take the head coaches job.
Dex to UVA was presumed done deal at some point and then the public reporting is that Dex botched the final interview - particularly a topic about lowering academic standards for football recruits.
UVA then turned to Elliott - stealing him away from Duke. Of course Duke pivoted to Elko and then hired Diaz after Elko took the A&M
Also Nakos reporting the name heās hearing most linked to VT is Cheney. Their fans will be so pissed if they hire someone with no P4 experience again but heās not the worst hire. Not one that scares me though
