With respect to brand, Penn State was far more of a draw than VPI will be. We are about to find out how much of Franklin’s recruiting success translates when he is no longer in a P2 conference at a school with a long standing tradition in football success. 2011 was a long time ago for an 18 yo kid and that was the last time the hokies were consistently good.

Think it was just the OL Meadows who went there.

I have wondered about this. Money for Franklin, for his assistants, for players . . . that’s a lot to find.

Why hasn’t TE been a better recruiter? He seems to be personable and generally a good guy. Just the lack of money? Lack of salesmanship? Too honest for his own good?

There was another guy, DE/LB from Farrior’s old HS I think. Thought there was a 3rd, but I’m blanking. That was shaping up to be Bronco’s best class, but they just scattered when he quit. I remember the 4 star OL went to Michigan, another OL and the twins went to BYU, a LB or safety went to UNC, probably others I’m forgetting.

Burgos. He’s actually in the portal now.

Well, I can’t say that I ā€œknowā€ but I suspect it is less TE and more UVA that is the issue but I’m not sure that TE is a very good recruiter. I think TE is that guy you really like and is a great guy but has the stern parent over him.

I think Elliott is sort of an average recruiter at best but he also was hamstrung by our lack of success and lack of local in-state pull. Both are changing and can help Elliott.

He came out of the gate thinking he was still at Clemson.

Then there were also reports that they canceled or no-showed recruits to go chase higher rated players and pissed off some HS coaches.

Bc we’ve been a terrible for the better part of 20 years as a program?

Or bc in year 2 of his tenure we lost 3 players to gun violence?

Or bc we haven’t had a ton of success putting players in the league over last decade?

Or bc we were slow to adapt to the NIL era and this year is the first time we’ve had the funds to buy talent?

I’d say the cards have been pretty stacked against Tony E to be a good recruiter up to this point.

I think that is why this offseason is so important. Building on a 10 win season and possible CFP birth is crucial.

Agree. Unfortunately this success is not going to turn this staff into good recruiters. They are not. This magic season has gotten us zero 4 stars and zero flips to date. We are going to have to hope money/the portal can restock for next season.

He got blue chippers at Vandy?

Not good HS recruiters, but have been very solid at recruiting the portal. I’m cautiously optimistic about this ā€˜27 class tho. It’s off to a good start

And having to try to sell people on our commitment to football via the McCue Center.

Starting to turn the corner, though. The three 2027 commits from the 757 are legit.

And I really like the two Varina kids from this class.

What a 30 yr old facility that had 0 amenities didn’t turn on recruits?

I was listening to the Yahoo podcast and they mentioned that the school that could be hurt the most on the recruiting trail is UNC. Franklin used to get some guys from the Carolinas, but Brown was a formidable recruiter. If Belichick continues to flounder, Franklin could clean up at UNC’s expense. It’ll hurt us too, but we already weren’t getting top recruits, so there’s not a lot of room to go down when you’re already in the basement.

And we’re gonna have Mensah backing up arch manning next year anyways

I ask a question like this simply because the absurdity of college football right now: with the amount of jobs open and the amount of ā€œhigh profileā€ coaches who have signed extensions, y’all think there’s any shot someone comes calling for TE?

Wouldn’t be surprised if someone put out a backchannel feeler. But doubt there’s an outright attempt to poach him.
