Can’t stand Dan Wolken but the enemy of my enemy is my friend here lol

To me, it feels similar to when they hired Buzz Williams. You knew they were going to recruit at a high level and have some really talented teams, but it doesn’t seem like va tech is his long-term goal. It’s hard not to see him leaving for the SEC or BIG10, assuming he’s successful. But yeah, this hurts us in the short-term.

I’d say UVA coexisted with Buzz pretty well… Hopefully similar outcome with football

I don’t get the doom and gloom about competing with him when we just showed what the resources this offseason can do for us on the field. TE can now go to the donors, administration, fans and say ā€œSee?ā€

Will Franklin hurt in some respects? Absolutely. But to act like this season doesn’t help shift some stuff in our direction also feels a bit like cope.

If I were Tony Elliott, I’d make a run at Poindexter as AHC and recruiting coordinator and whatever other title he’d want. Salvage what you can out of in-state recruiting and juice him for his Franklin knowledge. And, frankly, stop him from heading to Blacksburg. Although Dex hates VPI and can’t be happy that Franklin passed him over two or three times to be the sole DC in Happy Valley.

At this point, anything other than a solo DC job seems like a step down for Dex.

AHC/head coach-in-waiting.

He’s probably not going to be retained at Penn State.

Like the question I have is if Franklin is such a slam dunk hire, then why is he ending up at a poorly resourced ACC school?

$7 million a year rumored

Yeah and during that same time we were several games below .500! If we want to build on the success of this season, we do eventually need to do some decent high school recruiting!

A lot of that is Fuente and Bronco not recruiting our region very much at all. Elliott and Pry have tried a bit more, but its mostly been picking over the scraps left by others.

Sorta my point. Are the resources actually there beyond what they’re paying Franklin? Where were they before? Is there really some big untapped VT athletics donor pool that is now magically accessed that can actually surpass half the ACC

As you can tell, I’m really skeptical on all of these points. You could have made some similar ones about UVA, but I think we always knew the answer to the last question was yes.

And that one 4 star high school recruit is the best player on the team….

High school recruiting matters. A lot.

The VPI BOV approved a substantial increase to the student activities and athletics fees that add a lot of money to the pot. And they’re fully funded with donor commitments to $200-210M in 2026, but there’s an annual shortfall of about $60M thereafter.

a casual budget deficit 3x the size of the annual revenue sharing cap that has teams panicking about finances

Yeah, I’m not sure how you can rely on donors to pick up $60M per year until conference realignment.

The only VPI billionaire I can name is Bill Goodwin, but he’s more associated with UVa (because of Darden) than he is with his undergrad alma mater. (And he’s more interested in public health and academic giving than he is athletic giving.)

Yeah I agree with this point. Just think the impediment to that is our current coach, not an opposing new hire coach.

I know there were at least 2 or 3 commits that flipped from us to them right after Bronco left. I haven’t looked to see how they’re doing down there.

I’ve got my eyes on what Davion ā€œFatRatā€ Brown does. Was a Penn State de-commit out of Trinity and one of the best players in the state.

Big boys are on him. I’m guessing Hokies think he’s locked up now.
