There’s a lot I don’t like about Dabo, but when you look at what/how he took over and what he achieved, it’s impressive. Like you said his glow up is impressive

I have to say … he is just a Winner. Came from absolutely nothing. Earned it all. We know people like that in our lives. Tell me the rules of the game and get out of the way.

Lmao Tony was not pushed out.

Whatever you say man, he went from turning down interest from Auburn, Tennessee, and South Carolina to being ready to take Virginia or Duke the following year.

I’m not delusional enough about our program to think he jumped on us because we’re a better job, so what changed?

Clemson’s offense stuttered bad and there was significant pressure for some new leadership on that side of the ball. There were reputable national reporters insinuating as much at the time. I remember because the noise was at a fever pitch before I even knew our job was open!

People were MAD about the Clemson offense that season.

There are many ways to read this obviously, but Dabo did tell him he needed to take this one!

I think you’re simplifying it a bit much — and maybe reading too much into it.

Here’s the full quote from the introductory news conference:

ā€œ[Swinney] has been the one that’s helped me stay patient, to look for the right fit, to make sure that I get into a situation where there’s alignment.ā€

ā€œThere are jobs that he would give me his blessing on, and there were jobs that he wouldn’t give me his blessing on, and when I heard him say that he felt like Virginia was the perfect fit for Tony Elliott, then that’s all I needed to hear.ā€

There’s a world where Elliott’s stock dropped after a rough offensive output in 2021, and also that he wasn’t pushed out of the OC job at Clemson lol. Aka the world that we live in.

Nah it’s binary no space for grey or multiple possibilities.

I’m definitely reading into it too much, but it’s also weird!

Yall can believe what you want, but there was a LOT of noise about Dabo needing a new OC that entire season.

You don’t go from turning down SEC jobs to taking ours in the course of a year unless things have gone quite poorly. They were firmly a bottom half offense his last year at Clemson which was not acceptable for them at the time.

Hey man, not going to diss 24.6 points per game! That would be second-best in Des Kitchings’ OC career!

By the way, not sure where to put this, but well done….

He didn’t turn down any job offers. Those schools expressed interest in interviewing him along with other candidates. He took himself out of consideration before decisions were made. Maybe he didn’t feel like he’d get the job or he didn’t like the fit or something else.

If your boss says take this promotion at a different company, it’s a great job and opportunity and you deserve it, he’s not saying that if you don’t leave I’m going to fire you.

This, except their families.

Fast forward a year…

He was also an alum who had only ever coached at Clemson and played a huge role in winning multiple championships. he would’ve had to have 5 years like 2021 to sniff the hot seat. It’s like saying we pushed Biscuit out in 2022.

He turned down those other jobs because their fanbases have entirely unrealistic expectations that have caused first time head coaches to fail in the past.

I don’t know about internal actual pressure but he was getting called out by national media. There was a lot of criticism about QB development.

Demise of the offense started when Jeff Scout left who was the co-OC.

They literally fired his replacement, also a former Clemson player who had worked with Swinney as far back as 04, and had been there in his current stint for 7 years, at the end of the next season. The time was up on that offense and they realized that. Streeter was just an attempt at continuity after losing both coordinators in the same off season + an ode to Dabo’s stubbornness.

Elliott could have stayed one more year! Especially after Venables left. But he would have been gone the next season and not getting HC offers, and they all knew that.

Freshman Cade Klubnik and year 2 DJU weren’t going to save them and Dabo wasn’t going to take a transfer. He got while the getting was good, and Dabo was happy to let him do it.

He did two years at SC State and three at Furman before rejoining Dabo, who was his WR coach when he played at Clemson.

Did Tony kick your dog at some point? Or steal your girl back in the day?

It feels like you’re determined to hit the guy whenever/where ever you can.
