Why not de Ridder? Iāve seen a few people say now that they donāt expect him back. Whatās the thinking there? I havenāt seen him anywhere on draft boards.
We should absolutely try to bring TDR back, but Iām just not sure how much he wants to stay if he doesnāt have real NBA prospects. We might pay more than a euro / g league contract. But he might be willing to take a pay cut to be a full time pro in Europe where his family can watch his games
The most optimistic case is we bring back
Chance, Sam, TDR, Grünloh
And that Eli + Barksdale are able to play backup slots.
Then weād only need a starting two guard, a backup center, and a backup wing.
This is where it would be nice to have some amount of inside gossip but it sees that this staff has prevented any leaks so far. Iām not sure weāve even heard gossip on how Barksdale looks in practice.
āWants to stayā. I imagine heād want to stay for another large check for one more year compared to what heāll make when he goes home. Bigger gear is he stays and transfers.
Also go watch the post game celebration from yesterday. TDR and Grünloh were very into it. Those guys seem to genuinely enjoy the UVA experience. As of today, with no info, Iād stay 70% Grünloh stays 55% TDR 50% Lewis.
What smoke is there? Tugard isnāt a legit source and Lewis re-posted UVA stuff after the game yesterday. Iām genuinely asking bc I may have missed something
Would be thrilled to keep all 3- but all of these guys have had a hell of a season, and will be big time prospects on the market. They will get a deserved payday and big time program looks. Good news is, this staff has shown an unbelievable ability to build a top team in this environment. We will be fine regardless.
Iām hyper focused on overperforming seed expectation and making a run. Itās been 7 years without a sweet NCAAT victoryā¦
Just imo, in this climate, guys in their last year Hoo knows what the motivation is? Does he love UVA and Odom? No idea. Does he want a bigger check? Be closer to home (where is home lol?) girlfriend here? Just all the unknowns in this climate is my rationale.
Tu is very unreliable. Sometimes will nail things but most of the time I feel like heās wrong. And as I recall he didnāt say he was transferring, just that he and de Ridder donāt get along.
Iām sure teams will try to lure him. Hopefully we prioritize him
He said earlier in the season he loved Charlottesville so much he might buy a house here. Of course, perhaps he meant later in life, or was just talking before big offers come.
Iām just not convinced these guys will be looking to bail out at the first opportunity after the season theyāve had. By all accounts, Odom is a coach guys like playing for, team chemistry seems to be a strength, we just finished second in the ACC, and payroll seems to be very competitive. Game day environments are great as well. Iām just not sure there are that many more appealing spots.
(as usualā¦) I know nothing, and just rampantly speculating, but I suppose thereās a chance we already built some sort of second year into Samās deal. Unlikely, but possible.
My current prior on all this is that I donāt know these guys, so I donāt know what will motivate them, what theyāre after, what makes them tick. But I do know that guys tend to move a lot these days. But also, guys are more likely to stay when $$ is good, team is good, and thereās coaching stability.
Itās not worth it financially for a player with college eligibility left to stay in the draft unless he gets picked in the top 35-40 or so. Mallory would be the shortest player in the NBA (or in the handful of shortest). I donāt see serious interest by an NBA team to spend a 1st round pick or very high 2nd rounder with a guaranteed contract on him.
