We are going to have to bring in 7-8 guys probably.

The optimistic scenario is we keep Chance, Sam, Grünloh, and Carrere or Barksdale can actually play 5-7 minutes a game next year.

The worse scenario is that basically the only guy we retain is Chance.

Barksdale being playable would be massive as it means we wouldn’t need to hunt down a backup four man

Why not de Ridder? I’ve seen a few people say now that they don’t expect him back. What’s the thinking there? I haven’t seen him anywhere on draft boards.

We should absolutely try to bring TDR back, but I’m just not sure how much he wants to stay if he doesn’t have real NBA prospects. We might pay more than a euro / g league contract. But he might be willing to take a pay cut to be a full time pro in Europe where his family can watch his games

The most optimistic case is we bring back

Chance, Sam, TDR, Grünloh

And that Eli + Barksdale are able to play backup slots.

Then we’d only need a starting two guard, a backup center, and a backup wing.

This is where it would be nice to have some amount of inside gossip but it sees that this staff has prevented any leaks so far. I’m not sure we’ve even heard gossip on how Barksdale looks in practice.

ā€˜Wants to stay’. I imagine he’d want to stay for another large check for one more year compared to what he’ll make when he goes home. Bigger gear is he stays and transfers.

Also go watch the post game celebration from yesterday. TDR and Grünloh were very into it. Those guys seem to genuinely enjoy the UVA experience. As of today, with no info, I’d stay 70% Grünloh stays 55% TDR 50% Lewis.

Why Lewis 50%? That seems really low

Where there’s smoke there’s fire. This feels like every other time we’ve lost a guy

What smoke is there? Tugard isn’t a legit source and Lewis re-posted UVA stuff after the game yesterday. I’m genuinely asking bc I may have missed something

Would be thrilled to keep all 3- but all of these guys have had a hell of a season, and will be big time prospects on the market. They will get a deserved payday and big time program looks. Good news is, this staff has shown an unbelievable ability to build a top team in this environment. We will be fine regardless.

I’m hyper focused on overperforming seed expectation and making a run. It’s been 7 years without a sweet NCAAT victory…

isn’t this what we’ve said every other time?

Just imo, in this climate, guys in their last year Hoo knows what the motivation is? Does he love UVA and Odom? No idea. Does he want a bigger check? Be closer to home (where is home lol?) girlfriend here? Just all the unknowns in this climate is my rationale.

Tu is very unreliable. Sometimes will nail things but most of the time I feel like he’s wrong. And as I recall he didn’t say he was transferring, just that he and de Ridder don’t get along.

I’m sure teams will try to lure him. Hopefully we prioritize him

By your logic anytime any random fan says a player might transfer we should probably expect them to transfer

He said earlier in the season he loved Charlottesville so much he might buy a house here. Of course, perhaps he meant later in life, or was just talking before big offers come.

I’m just not convinced these guys will be looking to bail out at the first opportunity after the season they’ve had. By all accounts, Odom is a coach guys like playing for, team chemistry seems to be a strength, we just finished second in the ACC, and payroll seems to be very competitive. Game day environments are great as well. I’m just not sure there are that many more appealing spots.

(as usual…) I know nothing, and just rampantly speculating, but I suppose there’s a chance we already built some sort of second year into Sam’s deal. Unlikely, but possible.

My current prior on all this is that I don’t know these guys, so I don’t know what will motivate them, what they’re after, what makes them tick. But I do know that guys tend to move a lot these days. But also, guys are more likely to stay when $$ is good, team is good, and there’s coaching stability.

TLDR - we shall see

I think if we bring back 3/4 of the rotation returners it’s a massive success.

He’s past eligible for the draft. He can sign at any time with a pro team, including today (assuming any buyout with us is taken care of.)

Are we pursuing another euro with even more words in his name?

It’s not worth it financially for a player with college eligibility left to stay in the draft unless he gets picked in the top 35-40 or so. Mallory would be the shortest player in the NBA (or in the handful of shortest). I don’t see serious interest by an NBA team to spend a 1st round pick or very high 2nd rounder with a guaranteed contract on him.
