🏀 2025-26 In-Season Virginia Women's Basketball

I hate the idea in so many of these situations that just because someone isn’t quite terrible enough to get rid of, you can’t fire them. These are big time, highly paid jobs for a reason. If there is a better option, then you need to be kind of merciless about it. These things are big businesses now, and the risk of ignominy is part of what the money is for!

I know our hearts (especially long time fans) are with the idea of Reiss coaching the team, but Mox inherited a complete dumpster fire, and will have us in the tournament this year. I know most…myself included…thought it might happen a little sooner in the portal & NIL era, but I don’t think you can get rid of a coach who is coming off an NCAA bid with how rarely that’s happened here in the last 15+ years.

The question should be, is this team well coached? I don’t think it is but I don’t follow women’s basketball that closely.

Ill say I was shocked to see Mox’s winning percentage sitting around 55% at UVa.

Its textbook just good enough to stay out of being fired.

Was busy all afternoon and didn’t get to watch. Incredible win. I thought this was the hopeless game.

Winning vs UNC is still pretty unlikely, but I think our odds vs VT are solid. We win vs VT and a game or two in the ACCT and maybe we’re a 9 or 10 seed.

Only moved up one in Net to 36 - crazy after a Yuge win

That’s extraordinary. At 36th, you’d expect teams to start being pretty tightly clumped by that point and that should be have been one of if not the biggest needle-moving wins of the day.

Hoos up to #31 in AP poll.
Received zero votes last week.

They happen to be in a part of the rankings that isn’t a tight cluster. Here’s a chart with the top 50 women’s teams on T-Rank; Y-axis is Barthag (T-Rank power rating), X-Axis is rank (where the higher number is the better rank):

Did not know that Gabby White’s mom is the UNC associate HC

She spent her middle and high school years in the Chapel Hill, N.C., area, surrounded by Carolina blue. Her mother, Joanne Aluka-White, is the associate head coach on the University of North Carolina women’s basketball team, and the Tar Heels became a second family for Gabby White.

When it came time for White to look for a college program, however, she didn’t view UNC as an attractive option.

“When I was younger, I thought about it,” White, a first-year guard at the University of Virginia, said this week at John Paul Jones Arena. “But as I got older, I was like, ‘I want to keep my home life, my relationship with my mom and coaching separate.’ I didn’t want that to mesh and potentially ruin the bond that we have.”

Their bond couldn’t be much stronger. “She’s, like, my best friend,” White said, and that adds another storyline to Virginia’s next game.

Uh oh - does that mean she plays poorly to not upset her mom tonight?

This was a really nice quote

Her mother doesn’t like being in the spotlight, White said. And so when UNC asked Aluka-White asked her to discuss her fight with cancer and the importance of early detection in a video for social media, White said, her mother initially balked.

“But talking to her, we came to an understanding that it’s something that needs to be said,” White said. “She has a voice that needs to be heard, because it’s big. It’s something that she can relate to, she can help me and other young women in the future.”

Just checked the score, and it’s not going great so far for the Hoos, but this moment from pregame is perfect.

Down 17 at the half. Absolutely zero carry over momentum from the Stanford upset.

Down by 10 .UNC has 16 3s

I wasn’t able to watch the game, but I just checked the box score. We were +7 on turnovers, and +8 on offensive rebounds. That’s a lot of extra possessions.

But UNC was 16-24 from three. That’s pretty damn hard to overcome.

Those 3s were the killers. We make a little run and then those 3s would dishearten you. In my case it was more like hate. I remember a time when Duke wasn’t so hot and all my hatred went to UNC. Duke has took their place now.

Didn’t watch but a few minutes of 3rd Q. Did they stay in that zone most of the game? If they did the way UNC were hitting their 3pt shots that was coaching malpractice.

Quick adjustments are not a hallmark of the Mox administration. Neither is keeping momentum – I looked back and we’re now 1-5 after the real feel good wins of her tenure, including the dud losses to Pitt and Wake. I feel like maintaining the team’s consistent mood and effort level is a real problem for her.

No one is beating a team who goes 16-24 from 3. That’s insane
