🏀 2025-26 In-Season Virginia Women's Basketball

This game had all the ingredients for a sleepy start, and that’s what we got. Up 17-6 after Q1 anyway.

Up 32-22 at the half but man, we look bad.

Halftime frisbee dog came to play though! This guy never stops moving.

We never look well coached.

Started to finally pull away late in the 3rd behind some great shooting by Kymora. 18-point lead going into Q4.

Believe it or not we’re now up by 37. Late Q3 and early Q4 has been all Kymora Johnson.

She now has 41 points, 15-20 FG, 10-13 on threes. :fire: :fire: :fire: Pretty sure she’s hit 7 straight 3PA

Such a bizarre game. Until mid-Q3, it was a sloppy, sleepy, late-December buy game, and we led by only 9. Then Kymora scored 27 points in 11 minutes, Winthrop got flustered and piled up the turnovers, and suddenly we’re up by 37.

Reportedly Kymora’s 41 is the most points, and her 10 threes is the most made threes, in a game by any Virginia basketball player, men or women, in JPJ. And on top of that Clark was 1 rebound shy of a triple-double. In a game that was pretty much crap for the first 25 minutes lol.

Watched most of the game. Mo was unreal. That last 3 she was standing next to Mox.

Admittedly I haven’t followed the women’s team that closely but looks like we’re currently 31 in the NET. If we win the ACC games we should, are we tracking towards an NCAA bid? Seem to remember hearing about a bad OOC loss a few weeks back.

No real way to know how good they are because they haven’t beaten anybody good and they’ve been playing mostly garbage schedule.
It will get real really fast in the ACC

The ACC on the women’s side the last few years has been rock-crushingly tough but this year apparently not so much. Only 3 teams in the top 25 vs 6, I think, last year. In a normal year, going 9-9 in the ACC would leave us at 17-12 (29 game regular season? What?) which doesn’t look great but might get us on the bubble (2 of our 3 OOC losses were to ranked teams).

But with the ACC being a little weaker this year we’ll need to do better, and that UMBC loss is going to haunt us all year. So… depends on how many games we “should” win. We’ll probably need to win at least 20 to have a real shot.

TIL the women play 18 conference games, but use the true round robin schedule + 1 rivalry H&H with VT. Why the men don’t is still baffling.

Probably because of the travel concerns. Not sure why the women don’t have the same complaint (maybe they do, and it’s just leverage)

Finally got to see the women play in person this season and they did not disappoint. SMU isn’t very good, but the score understates how thoroughly UVA controlled the game. They were CTB-grade locked in on defense, took good care of the ball, and absolutely dominated SMU inside with their size and interior passing. Maybe because they went 2/15 from 3 it was the most fundamentally sound game I’ve seen them play under Coach Mox.

Early brackets have them as like a 11-seed, and that feels about right. That is assuming tonight they played to a ceiling they’ll only occasionally reach as opposed to having found a new gear.

24 assists and 13 turnovers feels like some kind of Mox team ratio record for an Acc game

Q3 was an absolute thing of beauty. I’m not even sure we attempted a 3, we had 1 TO, and we sliced and diced them inside with beautiful passing. And on defense we held them scoreless for almost 8 straight minutes.

Looks like they got Hurd back tonight from injury. It’s the year of the block in Charlottesville: men are #4 in the nation in block%, women are #2 (per T-Rank). With Smith and Hurd healthy, the women can consistently put out some pretty big lineups with Levy or Hurd at the 3, Smith or Ring at the 4.

I think it’s reasonable to believe they’re headed for another gear, because for the first time…

Watched most of the game and as a Mox doubter am forced to admit that’s the best coached they looked so far under her tutelage. Hope the trend continues

Watched most of the game last night and it was the best version of this program in a long time.

The offense moved with purpose and efficiency two things they’ve lacked im the past. The defense was solid throughout the night and forced turnovers.

This is a team that should factor into the middle of the ACC with two conference wins already. The tournament is absolutely within reach.
