⚾ 2025 Baseball Offseason

I think those are the ones. Maybe Lanzendorfer too if he actually has eligibility left.

Guess you missed last postseason. Always frustrated me how his struggles always seemed to be amplified, even exaggerated by some fans. He had a really solid career for us.

Still think he’s not a finished product. He lost his command too much but I think that’s something that will get fixed easily at the next level. He probably doesn’t have the stuff to be a closer, and can’t go 3x through a lineup to be a starter, but I think he’s a guy that will ultimately pound the strike zone as a middle reliever.

Honestly the main thing he needs to fix is his delivery time, and learning a slide step from the stretch. If he isn’t such a liability when it comes to giving up steals he’ll have a shot as a reliever.

Speaking of Augustin…

Nice to get him back in the fold.

Any health update on him? He’s a game changer if healthy but a big if.

follow up-- what positions would you like us to build up more with the remaining roster spots? Catcher? Pitching?

Buchanan was at the Pollard intro press conference, but his name is still in the portal according to D1 Baseball. Tough to read seems like he’s pretty low key on social media.

The last I heard was that the injury was severe, which should come as no surprise given he missed the entire season. No idea on a timetable or anything.

@chavlicek15 what’s your nephew doing?

Definitely need a catcher for depth, would be surprised if we don’t add another one via the portal. Need some more LHP in the bullpen, and probably another transfer that can at least battle for a weekend rotation spot. Preferably a veteran arm.

Thanks for the list!

By my count, we have 8 returners, 11 portal commits, 14 HS commits and 5 draft eligible which is 38 spots. 4-5 of the HS commits are draft risks. If we lose 10 to the draft, we’ll have 6 spots to fill.

And chances are very high we’re not losing 10 to the draft. Hanson has already said he’s planning on coming back, am just including him as part of the draft eligible list in case some team takes a late flier on him. The other draft eligible guys I all expect back as well, maybe someone takes a chance on O’Connor but given he’s currently injured I highly doubt it.

As of right now I’d say the absolute most players we lose from our HS class is four. Becker and Stroman aren’t complete lost causes but I wouldn’t bank on either of them making it here. Paone is in the range where I’d say he probably goes to college but it’s not a sure thing, could still go either way. By many different accounts Yoder is set on going to school so am confident with him but wouldn’t say it’s a 100% guarantee. Holmes and O’Connell are only listed as maybe draft risks because of their ranking on Perfect Game, they haven’t shown up on any draft lists that I’ve checked so we should be good there. And Mahala is well out of the range that I’d typically expect a HSer to go pro, was surprised to even see him on Future Stars’s list.

This is strictly a vibe I’m getting, but it feels like we’re not quite done yet in terms of portal attrition. We’re gonna have to make space for some necessary additions, to be honest I’m a little surprised that we took Kapa from Eastern Michigan given how our current roster construction looks. Not to say he’s a terrible add but we are running out of room and I didn’t view a RHP option as a necessity unless they view him as a potential starter on the weekend.

I forgot that part of the House settlement was roster limit exemptions for people who would’ve otherwise been cut from the team, so 34s not a hard cap. Guys might still choose to leave if they see that they won’t play and have to pay for school 100% themselves, but we don’t have to force attrition to make roster room.

Yeah it won’t be forced but I’m still a bit surprised at a couple of the names that have stuck around.

Actually he might have been better off just doing baseball–pitched much better after devoting all his time to it. May have worked out some more of the kinks earlier if he hadn’t straddled two sports.

So the first 105 are pretty sure bets to be gone (if they get drafted there). How likely is it that someone projected rounds 5 and higher to go if they are HS or still have leverage?

(I know how things worked historically but with NIL not sure if the calculus has changed)

We flipped OF Griffin Enis from Duke (ranked 65 in 2025 recruiting class at PG).

best part of this is that he’s from Miss and Oak had to have had his eye on him I’d think. But a guy with a 4.31 and 33 ACT (that’s like 98th percentile) understands value of a UVa degree.
