šŸ€ 2026 UVa Basketball Preseason

revenge of the nerds GIF

The actual award is not of interest to me (though good job Carter, Devin, and Dallin), but saw something interesting in it:

UVA’s Dallin Hall (intercollegiate athletics administration), Carter Lang (economics) and Devin Tillis (intercollegiate athletics administration) were named to the NABC Honors Court.

That intercollegiate athletics administration program looked new and very athletics-transfer-coded, and indeed it is:

Designed for flexibility, the 12-credit program is delivered fully online in an asynchronous format and can be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis — allowing students to progress at their own pace.

3MW top 50-26 players. TDR at #26. No Chance yet, which makes me think they’ve put him in the top 25, which seems aggressive, but I like it!

I think it’s more than likely Chance and Sam are snubs.

Ah yes, that handy ā€œcertificateā€ program for grad transfers. On one hand, it’s good to see that admissions is working with athletics to be more flexible and adjusting to the current landscape. On the other, this is a stark reminder of how much has changed and that if education was ever a focus for the rev sports (debatable), any illusion of that has vanished.

If Chance is better than TDR it’s going to be a really fun 4 years. Best thing that could happen to the program is 4 years of a 1st team All ACC level hometown kid

I think Sam is a snub and Chance is top 25. One of the 3 has been talking him up as potential all American.

I love chance but that seems kind of nuts. Also people are sleeping on Sam because he’s an upperclassmen but he has increased his offensive rating every year including by a huge margin jumping from Toledo to the ACC. I think he’s poised to be a first or second team all ACC kind of player.

Assuming TDR, Chance, Grünloh & Lewis are the top 4, who ends the season as #5 in minutes played? Not the 5th starter…the guy who plays the most after the top 4.

Jim Root said on the podcast with Will Warren two days ago that he had Chance as a top 25 player.

That seems crazy to me. Without actually tabulating who I’d have above them- I’d probably have TDR a bit higher (1st team all-ACC used to mean something!) and chance in the 30ish area.

Analytics do LOVE Chance, but I do have a little concern about their validity since I feel like he faced a lot of second units (would love data on this tbh, he played with Dallin a lot but not sure how much against first teams).

For the teams that were allegedly interested in Sam and his stats, I do feel like he should be in the top 150 somewhere! 300s in EvanMiya last year + attrition above him (well over 100 seniors higher than him) + development should get you to about 100 imo

Chance being ranked as a preseason top 25 player would be insane lol. He might play himself into that category but ranking him above TDR would be crazy

Looking at Thijs’ shot chart in there upsets me a bit. There’s no reason he can’t be a knock down corner 3 guy, and it would help our offense so much. I hope he dials that in this year.

I agree it seems a bit high, but we need to step back (and look from a national prospective) how well Chance played as a borderline top 50 freshmen. It was nuts. I think people are expecting a natural 2nd year jump and thus some are ā€˜projecting’ him that high. This season and going forward he is a very high ceiling low floor guy. Personally, I have no idea what the ACC or National pg hierarchy is looking like for this coming season and where he may slot in.

Chances rates out very highly from an analytical perspective. The combination of 1) his HS recruiting ranking and 2) his stats last year, especially since he stuffed the stat sheet with points, rebounds, assists, steals, etc. is viewed very favorably by many models. I would wager there aren’t many rising sophomores still in CBB with Chance’s production freshman year.

Interesting, I don’t follow 3MW so I had no idea they held him in such esteem.

I might be crucified but I would have Cayden Boozer over Chance from a pure basketball talent perspective. And lil Boozer was outside the Top 50.

This isn’t just admissions, creating an entirely new certificate program probably needs support from the Ed School, the President, the Faculty Senate (or whatever it’s called at UVA) and maybe even the BOV. Admissions might not even care that much about an online non-degree program other than the provision that the credits can be applied to the MA program within 5 years.

I wonder what % of those students are athletes.

As long as she can use her hand bike! Still the only person I’ve ever seen use one do those at a gym and not just as a PT exercise

Probably not the right thread for this, and I don’t know the first thing about higher education, but I thought Gen AI would kill all this asynchronous stuff.
