šŸ€ 2026 UVa Basketball Preseason

Since someone brought up the start date I’ve been stewing on this for a while

We are skipping opening day and playing on Tuesday for some reason this year! I want to be a part of everyone watching their teams for the first time on Monday. Not to mention that 11/3 is Election Night and I’d really rather not have the Maine Senate race or whatever going on in the back of my head.

Obviously not actually a big deal but I was annoyed

Might have more (sports) eyes on Tuesday. Less (sports) competition.

Yea I’m sure that’s the reason, get to be on actual ACC network or ESPN2 instead of the ACC Network Extra streaming thing.

On the bright side there’s actually some decent opening day games this year so will be nice to watch

Gonzaga-Purdue
Arizona-UCLA
Florida-Miami
Ohio State-BYU
Iowa State-Memphis

At some point there was a small groundswell of support to not schedule games on Election Day to encourage student athletes to vote and/or otherwise get involved in Election Day activities. I guess momentum stalled at some point, I haven’t heard this sentiment mentioned in the past few years.

Has anyone heard anything about that potential game with Indiana/Illinois/Arkansas? Is that still likely?

Illinois announced a January game with UNC so I think that matchup is probably off the table at least

Basket Under Review pod (Eamonn and Tate) did a fan mailbag thing and had 3 mins on UVa:

The shtick was responding to fan’s concerns about their team, and so the UVa prompt was concerns about the high end talent. Eamonn and Tate are not concerned and say nice things about our returners and Odom. That’s pretty much it!

Definitely has the be someone on this board and I must ask WHY you did not ask about our PG situation instead?!

Speaking as a pessimist, I didn’t like the episode

It was like the spiritual opposite of Brian Snow’s ā€œwhy your team sucksā€ yearly guest episode on Dauster’s old podcast , where Snow would go through the top 10 teams and say why they sucked. Needles to say, I loved that episode.

Eamonn seemed to solicit issues from locked in fans and then poo poo them, at least for the top teams. Plus he said TDR is a borderline first round guy, which isn’t correct.

I woulda liked it better if he steel manned, then rebut.

(No, I wasn’t either of the questioners. I did make a comment on his Substack comparing Dusty May to Charles Grodin at the end of Heartbreak Kid, though…)

Of course you did Haney. Also, I haven’t been tracking May closely for a bit now but somehow feel caught up entirely

Not sure if this got posted already, but I missed Thijs calling opposing student sections ā€œa bunch of nerdsā€ compared to what he’s experienced in road games in Greece and Serbia:

Excellent. Someone needs to show him the Duke nerd pic that @DFresh11 uses

TDR would be a borderline 1st round guy if he played like he did last season, but was 3 years younger. Maybe.

So I was the person from the discord who posted my concerns, and honestly yeah I agree. I like Eamonn a lot, but it’s disingenuous to ask a question that’s looking for negatives and then wonder why a fan is nitpicking in their response when their team is projected to be top 10 in the country. I guess I should’ve just said ā€œNo concerns, we’re awesomeā€ or not answered at all lol, disappointed they didn’t at least entertain the response as I thought that was the entire point of the podcast.

@zh00s I almost put that instead of our depth at the 5 but decided not to, mainly because I think Mallory will have an easier time playing 30 mpg if needed than Grünloh will making the depth there a little less important. The coach comments about the backup PG spot are a bit concerning but I still have faith someone from that group will emerge and we’ll be fine there. I also don’t think that concern would have been answered anyway based on their reactions to the other two.

Yeah, agree.

3MW top 75-51 players. Grünloh at 53!!

Jim Root and Will Warren. Will had Virginia’s offense at 6, Jim as honorable mention.

Both super high on Chance - Jim has him as a top 25 player.

Jim has questions about free throw rate and easy opportunities. Good conversation overall.

No mention of back up PG, they call Chance a true floor general, and weirdly Jim says Dallin was kind of loose with the ball. So, grain of salt.

Haha yeah - I was mostly joking for that reason. Even tho they know Virginia the level of depth will always be a bit less than us, so I suspect any answer wouldn’t quite be satisfying.

I’ve come more on the train that Mallory’s leap and what form it takes will be the single most important thing for our offensive ceiling.

Didn’t Dallin have the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the ACC?

He had a pretty high turnover rate for his possession %. It was 20.4. Chance was 14.0 in comparison with both a higher possession % and higher shot %

Maybe he had a bit of a loose dribble, too? Hard to have the ball on a string at that height, I guess.

We need someone to take over the clutch time stuff.
