Wow. The one “downside” to the Sweet 16 run was it meant we’d be hang on to Mox, who I was ready to move on from. Now we got all the upside with none of the downside! Credit to Carla for pulling the trigger. (Although if there was some bad ish going on behind the scenes, she may have had no real choice.)
If all of that is true and she was gone either way, I have no idea why we couldn’t have told Reiss to hold on a week or so. Unless she chose Florida over us, which is certainly possible
I have to think there was at least some back channel communication between UVA and Reiss through agents or search firms or intermediaries. UF might also just be a better job too, I haven’t looked at budgets and stuff but generally SEC > ACC, right?
Generally but I feel like women’s basketball is a little different… Florida to my knowledge doesn’t have the mega donor setup like we do specific to the sport.
Is it possible Hoos got the best of both worlds with this? Proved you can win at UVa even with chaos. And they got rid of the top ah$t stirer and maybe saved the roster.
I’d say so. Don’t have to eat the buyout assuming this qualifies as being fired for cause, go make a good hire and get someone to fully utilize the funds we’ve put into this program.
Oh, if they made this move and it results in Mo leaving, then that might have been as bad a mishandle as hiring Tina was.
Edit - Ooooh. If the abuse allegations are in any way correct, then they had no choice. And if its been under investigation for ~3 weeks, then they should have had time to back-channel with Reiss. In which case its at least possible we tried and Reiss said “no”.
If she did leave, she’d be the third star UVa player in the past few years from Cville to leave the nest, starting with Fields and Ford. So it’s not new.
Mo > Mox, imo. If Mo wanted Mox gone this year, then Mox should be gone. Keeping Mox and losing Mo this year would probably be as much of a fire able offense as you could have running that sport.
Honestly, the Ford move surprises me the most. He’s from right here, and we know the family a bit and they’d drag his sisters to all of his games (and I mean all. They’d complain about it), the whole family is tight-knit. So him splitting just before his younger sister arrived on grounds as a first first year on the crew team this year (whole family is great athletes, maybe even better than the Langs) always surprised me. I guess the amount of money was substantial.
