Dell was a McDonaldâs All American. I donât remember the high school profiles of guys like Dale Solomon, Bimbo Coles (although I seem to remember he was a high school All American football player), Al Young, Perry Young, but Curry has to be at the top of that list. The Hokies had some dudes in the Metro Conference days.
Got me to thinking, our best all time player is Ralph and then you can debate whether the next guy is among Stith, Brogdon, Walker, Lamp, Parkhill, etcâŚ
And Ralph is our most heralded recruit, but after him isâŚCory Alexander? Weâve had a couple handfuls of burger boys over the years, but I donât know the recruiting reputations of guys before Ralph. After him I think Cory was the most highly rated. Stith was heavily recruited, but he wasnât a McD. I think Burrough, Staples, Dersh and Guy were McDs but didnât have Coryâs national stature. I have no knowledge of Lamp, Walker, Parkhill, etcâŚ
In terms of high school profiles, Majestic Mapp is probably somewhere up there on that list.
I think Junior is definitely up there in prized recruits as the game was played at that time
Cory for sure but if he went to GaTech or Michigan we were good at the PG spot.. haha
Landesberg was anoth McD
In any given year, Duke has 1-2 players who would rank among our top 15 ranked recruits of all-time.
Sheehey and Dersh were both highly coveted.
Lamp was a major coup for Holland. Just looked it up: he was a McD All American, the first year they did that.
Cortney Alexander? Surprised I dont think was Mcdonalds
Donât know where else to put this soâŚ
Goodman has us in his top 10 losers of the Spring.
Thatâs rage bait
Goodman is on my top 10 list of losers
Landesberg?
Goodmans winners and losers really factor in coaching. Iâm assuming our being on the list is because we lost TB (even if it was not this off season)
Perhaps heâs kinda looking at gross rather than net? Gross, we lost the entire team (except Gertrude). Net, looks like we improved. (Tbh it feels like a toss-in because he needed 10.)
Yeah I guess if you start us in a massive hole because Tony retired then that makes sense, but that feels incredibly misleading.
As someone who often sticks up for Field of 68 and their content (the daily newsletter is really good and IMO worth a few of your bucks), their offseason winners and losers lists are totally incoherent. Itâs just content for the sake of content.
Villanova lost a mediocre coach who couldnât win there even with $$ and a Jay Wright blessing and gained (1) a decent coach and (2) a pope.
I think that makes them a winner
Makes sense if you say - entire staff gone - entire roster gone.
Thatâs hard to replace what we thought we had in October 2024.
But comparing to what we had in March 2025 I think we are at least even.
I know we pay attention a lot more minusculy than the national mediaâŚ.
Blake/Robinson vs GrĂźnloh/Onyenso
Saunders/Cofie vs DeRidder/Tillis
McKneely/Taine vs Thomas/Gertrude
Ames/Walker vs White/Lewis
Rohde/Sharma vs Hall/Mallory
Bliss, Power, Lang and Roberts vs
Carrere, Barksdale, Lang
Yeah, for me, the way I look at is that last year, we had a team that couldnât make the NIT. This year feels like missing the tourney would be a disappointment. So itâs hard to say we were an offseason loser.
And I say this as someone who wanted to lean at least a bit more into continuity (e.g., Kyle or Zay + Cofie and A-Rob).
