ACC Basketball 22-23 Preseason

What is driving your thinking? That would be a huge jump over last year. I’m optimistic, but maybe less so. Genuinely asking to hear how others are feeling

I’ve said all Summer that I think UVA will compete for the conference championship. Give Tony an experienced (in his system) team and he’s dangerous as hell. Give him some perimeter shooting to go with it and watch out. We need Franklin to get back to his sophomore season form shooting the ball, continued improvement from Kadin, and contributions from the two Isaacs, but I expect all that to happen. I expect the D to be very good and the offense to be considerably better than last season.

Not predicting UVA to win the conference, but we’re going to be fighting for it and I think have a good chance of winning it. Bennett is going to remind people who the best coach in the ACC is.

Great question - here’s my thinking:

I don’t think we have as high of a ceiling as Duke or Carolina, but I think we have a very high floor and a coach that’s proven to clean up in the ACC. We have packline continuity returning all starters plus the Italy trip experience and a very difficult non-con to get us tuned up. Plus I think our schedule is favorable.

My hope for the big jump comes from expectations that Reece and Kadin are both improved and ready to take on larger roles, Armaan upticking his 3-point shooting assuming the injury hurt him there, and the improved bench options with some much needed floor spacing and different lineup combos to play with. We are getting a massive talent influx coming in and I truly believe Traudt and McKneely are very day 1 ready while Dunn and Bond probably are not far behind.

Based on what I’ve heard from Tony, I think he’s going to be more adaptable this year with lineups. I am not expecting a complete departure and all of a sudden we go 9-10 deep w. Kihei playing 15-20 mins, but I could see him imitating the 2017 lineups a little bit where we had a veteran laden lineup but Guy Jerome and even Diakite forced their way into PT and he was willing to sit guys (in this case, Armaan Gardner Kihei vs. Hall Thompson Shayok) if they’re not playing well or to matchup better.

I guess it depends what people mean by 9 or 10 deep. What would people call the rotations between 14/15-16/17? If those are considered 9 deep then I think this year’s team is a lock to be 9 deep.

Yeah, I’m not sure there’s a huge gap between our floor & ceiling.

Floor - Top 4 ACC, double bye in the ACCT, Round of 32 exit.

Ceiling - ACC champs, Elite 8 exit

Likely - 2nd or 3rd in the ACC, Sweet 16 exit

Not a big difference

BC could be pretty good in the next couple of years…especially after Power transfers in after his FR year.

Given it’s from the Joe Burrow LSU year I’m shocked it’s lasted this long

Here’s another article that predicts we’ll finish top three in ACC, and could potentially get as high as 2 seed in the NCAA. Ranks us 21 in the country. Seems to be in line with other predictions.

Got my bball season tickets today. Once my family decides which ones they want… I’ll offer the rest up on here.

Just found out my family friend who is a case worker/floor manager at UVA hospital also got season tickets. In the nosebleeds. Took her up on the offer of going down for a game or two for like a random non-conference game or vs a low end acc school (like watching on TV for big games if not lower bowl and Im pretty cheap LOL.

Duke looks horrible. Albeit they were missing Lively and Dariq Whitehead but even in a scrimmage setting where everyone is supposed to look better than they actually are, I was underwhelmed.

Hoosplace previews the ACC, bottom 5:

Thoughts:

  • Yeah, GT and Pitt likely will bring up the rear
  • I think #13 is too low for NC State. That talent is intriguing. Smith is a likely lottery guy and will be one of the best guards in the conference and nation. The rest of the lineup is mostly solid, at best, but some intriguing new faces, including Jack Clark, the great SF Giants first basemen … wait, I mean the LaSalle x-fer that Jamal Robinson mentioned.
  • Louisville and Clemson seem like similar stories – ACC level frontcourts with mid-major caliber guards. If PJ Hall is banged up, I’d put them at #13.

Aamir Simms still has a chip on his shoulder for UVA haha

I’d play Clark. Yeah, 6’2" is undersized for the front court and at 65 he’s too old to play guard, but that guy was an unabashed asshole and played with passion. Everyone hated him, but he was a dawg.
