šŸ€ ACC Basketball Offseason 2024

I agree it is a long shot; I do have some reservations with the backcourts of UNC and Duke, but I will save them for now. The only homer thing I would say about our potential standing in the ACC is that we have TB; He absolutely thrives in ACC play, perhaps to the extent that he may be the best conference-winning coach in the country. March hasn’t been what we want, but he rolls in the ACC. He coached last year’s roster to a third-place finish, which was quite an accomplishment when one thinks about it.

We shall see, but I certainly feel a lot better going into next season, with the exception of losing Eli.

Here’s a kinda wild stat: according to Torvik’s website, as of now we have the 4th highest returning minutes percentage in the conference at 44% (behind ND, UNC, Pitt). 10 teams are under 33%, anchored of course by Louisville bringing no one back.

All those Rohde minutes boosting our number though :joy:

The clean sweep by Louisville is an astounding number. I’m sure its happened before, and Louisville did have a coaching change, but I suspect its only ever happened before at the high-major level with some sort of catastrophe (people getting arrested, etc).

I think Utah St actually did it this past season. Actually that whole Notre Dame-Penn St-VCU-Utah St coaching change cascade led to very low returning minutes at all the schools.

And for next season, Kentucky, Arkansas, and DePaul join Louisville on the 0% returning minutes squad.

Top half ACC potential here, decent retention of production outside of Carrington and Hinson, two high-floor transfers in Corhen (FSU big) and Dunn (Houston wing). Nice deep freshman class, few headliners but Capel’s been doing an okay job with unheralded rookies lately. Roster to keep an eye on this year.

Cards finally able to run a healthy 5-on-5. With this transfer and this week’s first HS recruit of the Pat Kelsey era (4-star forward Khani Rooths), Louisville is up to 10 inbounds that aren’t due to sit out for injury years. Impressively, all 11 inbound transfers (includes the two due to sit out a year for injuries) are ranked in the Top 250 of EvanMiya’s rankings.

Have absolutely no idea what to make of this roster. definitely some talent to work with, arguably top 5 ACC talent, but will be very curious to see how quickly it gels, if at all

No idea what the ACC will look like…if it even still exists…in 3-4 years. But in the meantime it really would help if Louisville was respectable again.

Just looking over the roster, not only does Louisville have talent, but for the first time in 3 years their collection of players actually looks like a roster someone intentionally put together rather than a random collection of players someone got by accident.

In 100 years or so, basketball will be played without guards, and we will all realize Kenny Payne was a visionary.

Brownell has been loving a two-true-big lineup in recent seasons. Some teams want just two of that type of player on his roster, he wants four. Jaeden Zackery is gonna have a big workload in front of him though, their perimeter rotation has a lot of question marks.

Zachery gets paired with 5th year Chase Hunter, who isn’t a great shooter but does everything else well. Big need for the Air Force transfer to come out of the gate hitting 3’s, as well as at least one of the youngsters in the back court to step up.

Foster rounds out the front court well. Very much a high energy Wilkins/Dunn kind of guy on defense, Gill/Gardner type on offense. Won’t space the floor, but will be a nice backup to Schieffelin, with Cincinatti transfer Lakhin at the 5, and Reeves and Wiggins the other backups. Stout rotation at the 4 and 5, can rebound and probably score with minimal dropoff going to their bench.

Ah forgot that Chase Hunter can be back. And that Heidbreder exists. That’s a solid roster…especially if they can get something from 1-2 of their freshmen perimeter players.

BC adding depth on the wing, one-year rental scorer out of the Southland Conference

Adequate depth at this point, 11 deep, but still lacking obvious NCAAT upside after losing most all of their quality production to graduation or the Portal this offseason, not a single player who played over 20 mpg of high-major ball last year:

As we approach Memorial Day weekend with Portal season slowing down after more than two months of activities, most of the ACC rosters are effectively set (12 or 13 'ships taken, no obvious vacancies, no public ongoing pursuits). Doesn’t go for everyone though, and a couple of ACC programs still have activity to watch:

  • UNC is still looking for another big man, with Vandy’s Ven-Allen Lubin, Kentucky’s Ugonna Onyenso, and Illinois’ Coleman Hawkins seemingly all in play.

  • Syracuse has only used 10 scholarships, so would probably like to add some more depth. Haven’t seen them connected to much of anyone, though, aside from maybe Jackson State guard Ken Evans.

  • GT is another team stuck at 10 'ships used with not much smoke coming out of Atlanta. Big issues with depth with the Jackets roster as it stands today.

  • A couple of NBA stay/go decisions still to watch, including Wake’s Hunter Sallis, FSU’s Jamir Watkins and Baba Miller, and GT’s Baye Ndongo (assuming he stays in my count above)

  • A few other teams not even able to run a five-on-five as of today: Stanford is stuck at 8 players, Miami at 9, and FSU at just 7 unless/until they get good news on Baba and/or Watkins. Obviously a lot of Portal work left to do for these three clubs.

I have 9 for FSU (Jackson, Bowen, Holt, Thomas, Deng, Nitu, Swinton, Ewin, Davis)
11 for UM, (Cleveland, Pack, Kidd, Djobet, Huie, Blackmon, Johnson, Ugochukwu, Bethea, Swartz, Johnson-Arigu)

Unless i missed something.

For FSU I’d missed Ewin on account of his being a JUCO transfer and for Justin Thomas, seeing conflicting reports as to whether he’s actually committed yet, though he is visiting this week. (Latest on FSU basketball transfer target Justin Thomas)

For Miami, I’d missed the recent announcements of both freshman Oguchukwu and Idaho State transfer Huie the last few days.

All added to the master list, thanks for the corrections.
