Snatching a tie from the jaws of victory

I thought Duke wore black on the road because it was the other team’s funeral… (thanks RJ Barrett for that great quote). Arkansas sure did make it interesting…

Down goes FSU. It’s a tie. But Duke and VT lost so its a win

Storming the court Arkansas? Good grief. Just make sure your coach stays dressed please.

Sigh. I hadn’t realized FSU was up 17 with 6:40 to play. This is on those guys.

Edit - Georgia outscored them 24-5 down the stretch.

FSU gave up a 20-2 run in less than 4 minutes of play. That’s not easy

Isn’t Ty-Laur Johnson the guy Tugard insisted UVA should go after?

JAR has kind of become a marksman from 3. Shooting over 40% for the season.

He’d have to sit out though as don’t think he’d be a grad transfer.

Indeed he is

It’s ok I may be putting his old man/or uncle out of a job soon

Going into the start of ACC play, ACC is solidly #6 in the power 6, but ahead of MWC, so that’s nice. Still some noncon left to go, but now 3/4 or so over, I think.

One noticeable difference is only 2 sub 150 teams versus 5 last year. And no sub 200 teams while FSU and Louisville (290th!!) were last year

Louisville is 4-1 against their likely Q3/Q4 opponents so far, which is a huge step up from last year.

I’m hoping over the next couple years that the new coaches turn things around at GT and ND. And of course for Payne to be fired.

Louisville beat Bellarmine. So they’re already vastly improved from last year.

Last week Norlander said Louisville was at .500 for the first time since January 2021. Now they are above .500. Progress!

That’s an interesting conundrum. Team strength early in the season, in the models, is very heavily weighted by pre-season expectations which gradually drops off. That’s fine, we’re aware.

But the overall strength of each conference is established during OOC, right? Because after that everyone just plays each other “in conference”. So, 95+% of that happens before the pre-season “thumb on the scale” goes away.

I’m sure KenPom has thought of this and I’m also sure the thumb-going-off-the-scale impact flows through to opponents and opponents of opponents, so we end up in the right place in the end. But it does suggest that if a conference sucked last year but turns out to suck less this year, the models would likely steadily underrate them. The teams they beat would be penalized more heavily because the model assumes the winning team is worse than it actually is, making the wins look worse.

A conference that improved might benefit disproportionately from the thumb-removal. I’m not saying the ACC is suddenly going to vault ahead of the SEC, or even catch the PAC2… I mean 12. But I suspect the various models are all still slightly underrating the ACC and it’ll move up in the coming weeks.

Just realized Torvik does these, too, and lets you remove preseason (just like in his regular ratings). In that, the ACC narrowly beats the Pac-12
