I hope this kinda stuff goes away (or at least doesnāt happen as often) with revenue sharing coming from the institution. Handshake agreements coming from coaches who donāt control the purse strings directly are problematic for this reason.
Exsctly the faster we move away from the used car salesmen deals the better. I also imagine players will become more sophisticated and start getting this stuff in writing and contracts and not verbal agreements.
lol yeah they should easily see it coming. They didnāt sign a contract? They are getting what they deserve which is a dose of reality. Hopefully they learn from it which is what they should be doing in college anyways.
I donāt blame the kids, but also everyone involved needs to be less stupid about this. These kids all wanted the higher headline number, rather than the stability that would come from a contract. The problem is if they signed a contract, the number would be much lower. But they didnāt want the lower number, they wanted a higher number and no contract. Thatās stupid! So kids, donāt be stupid. And also, Leonard, youāre a fully grown man. Donāt make promises that you canāt keep. Thatās wrong! Why does everyone have to be so stupid!? And/or amoral?
Tangent off of this, but this story from 2 years ago has someā¦interesting examples of contracts:
In one draft version of another deal The Athletic reviewed, the collective agreed to pay an athlete $1.5 million across two years but could āfrom time to timeā ask for repayment of that money, plus a 10 percent commission and expenses ā even if the agreement were to be terminated.
