Albany Game Thread (Wednesday 12/28. 6pm ACC Network)

Maybe I can reframe- I don’t think we have the chance to be an elite team unless our top 6 (starters plus BVP) are locked in and all at least hunting for looks. Given the fact that Armaan is the only wing on the roster who can create scoring looks (and again with the caveat that Reece, Kihei and Gardner seem to be more consistent/steadily confident), I think it is important for him to approach these games attacking/hunting for shots. That doesn’t necessarily mean shoot 8-9 threes per game. Driving and keeping the defense active, looking to score and drawing fouls all help open the offense more than if he is passive and we have to settle. That was my thought process, anyway.

Was a 1:1 swap for Dante Harris. Trade finalized and he’s a Hoya now

Feels to me like this team needs a couple of designated scorers. Right now all 5 guys seem to view themselves as role players who take opportunities if they happen to arise within the flow of the offense, which is great in some ways, but the result is on many possessions no one tries to create for themselves until late in the shot clock. It’s like everyone thinks they’re the third option.

Somebody probably figured this out already, but since the Baylor game, I believe we have now shot just 41-143 from three for a blistering 28.7%.

I don’t really have a take on where this team will end up shooting wise, but there’s enough variance in 3pt shooting that even 8-game spans aren’t necessarily bellwethers for how the season will go. For example, if you look at the 2020-21 team, which ended up at 37.5% from 3 (#24 in D1), they shot 31.7% in the 8 games following the opener against Towson. That would have put them in a tie for #267 in 3pt shooting if that was indicative of how they would shoot that season.

The Taine thing is sad, as he came from a semi pro(?) league but can’t seem to make a wide open three. Why would Tony change iMacs shot but not Taines…or for that matter Dunn’s?

Totally agree - we could definitely go on another hot streak. The reason I’m a little pessimistic on it is because we shot it poorly from three last year as well. This is mostly the same dudes so, I’m starting to fear it’s a little more of the same unless McKneely can kick it into gear (totally possible and I’m pulling hard for it).

But otherwise, #BurnTraudtsRedshirt

Exactly what I said earlier in the thread … we have a bunch of dudes who feel like they have to shoot when they’re open and it’s a chore … where are the dudes who hunt shots with joy and passion?

This was me on Nov 11:
Apparently … Leon Bond and Isaac Traudt are both redshirting this year … uuuuuugggghhhh … next year it is for any hope of a long postseason run …

Mainly because I didn’t trust BVP to be a knockdown shooter based on his career 32.5% from 3 and never even had a season of at least 35% … That hasn’t changed …
Reece masked a lot of deficiencies on both ends of the floor before he got hurt … but I think the season comes down to his health and ability to knock down threes and McKneely and Dunn being a lot more efficient and aggressive offensively. Those 2 have proven to be a plus defensively so far.
I’ll throw a number out there … Isaac + Dunn are scoring a combined 7.6 points per game … I think that number has to be at least 12 per game for us to maximize.

Dude is in severe need of a sports psychologist. And if he already has one he needs to switch to a new one that uses different methods because the current methods clearly don’t do the trick for him.

That line of questioning is also mildly confusing since he’s shooting 40.8% from 3 on nearly 4.5 attempts/game (slight downtick on volume from last season), while his at-rim percentage is way down from last season. I commented above that you can find all sorts of unrepresentative 3pt streaks in both good and bad directions over a small enough sample because of inherent variance in 3pt shooting, and this is even more true at the individual level. If you look at Kyle’s 2016-17 season (49.5% 3pt shooting on the year), you can find a 5-game stretch where he shot 21.5% from 3 (and of course you can find some 5-game stretches where he was over 60%).

Agree on the reframe. Armaan is more complete offensively than just shooting threes. For me he needs to understand maybe better when he is on vs not on if that makes sense, specifically from 3. Do other things when you arent knocking them down.

We are gonna see Imac start creating more on his own I think

McKneely’s drives last night were promising - the one with the little push shot was sweet and I don’t think we’ve had a guy go right at guys like that from the guard spot since Ty. Obviously Reece and kihei drive in a different way and use the the soft touch push shot/floater less

We have all talked about Isaac “changing his shot”. His first shot last night off the dribble on the right wing showcased his get way up on his J styles from his HS days…

I’m harboring hope that McKneely is gonna get hot from 3 like Perrantes did his first year. Remember he started out slow from 3 as well and then by start of ACC play seemed like he couldn’t miss. Game slows down for him and he gets more comfortable.

I think Armaan needs to work from inside out. He needs to be a threat to drive, and maybe take 2-3 shots inside the lane first, and then we set up some action for him to shoot from three.

Hitting a 2 first is a good idea for everybody.

I have believed for quite a while that our younger players believe the best way to get playing time is to not make mistakes, to focus on defense and where they are supposed to be and not shoot the ball unless it is obvious that it is an open one. It’s not a system that instills confidence and creativity in shooters, and I think it can carry over into subsequent years. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that our two best recent shooters, Hauser and Murphy, learned to shoot in other freer systems. There are occasional exceptions, Kyle Guy the most obvious, who was never afraid to shoot. Ty was not really afraid of anything either but he had multiple ways to impact the game. This wasn’t as big a thing IMO when Bennett routinely went deeper on the bench. I think Dunn would shoot more if he thought he were free to, but great defense and rebounding are his keys to PT. Just my opinion.
