Looked just like that “wow” picture that was making the rounds after he committed. Some attributed it to the camera angle. That one last night he had great lift and with a smooth shot - too good to not go in.
Honestly he seemed to get pushed around a lot. It looked like Shedrick of last year. Kinda tracks with games since Illinois. I’m scratching my head a bit about what is up with him. He was a game changer in the early season games - incredible activity, smart defense, exploiting pick n roll. Since then he’s been important but really not like he made a leap.
Maybe they need to pepper him with footballs at practice like they used to with Assane Sene (yeah I bet you hadn’t thought of him in a minute lol) to improve his hands.
Most efficient offensive player on the team by far … but only 7th in shot attempts.
On the coaches and team and Sheds to figure out how to get at least 3 or 4 more attempts per game … or at least draw double teams leading to open shots.
Out of 51 shot attempts
18 dunks out of 38 attempts at the rim
10 other twos
3 threes
Out of 35 makes
17 dunks out of 32 at the rim (25 assisted)
2 other twos (all assisted)
1 three (assisted)
So 28 of his 35 makes we’re assisted, 80%. He struggles to be effective getting his own shot. So when you are set up by others, as a big athletic guy, you should be more efficient. I think it’s easy to say the coaches should get him more shots, but when his shots need to come from others making plays and the defense reacting a certain way, easier said than done. They could scheme to get him post touches, but he hasn’t yet become effective there as other options. Also, he has has a very little chance to turn it over since he is catch and finish all the time, which also inflates an offensive efficiency.
Bigs in his rim-running archetype are the interior version of spot-up shooters: the better ones are going to be more efficient certainly, but their shot volume will fluctuate based on others for the reasons mentioned above. I do think he’s executing his role pretty well, his stats aren’t far off of what Mark Williams did for Duke last season, but he is not a shot creator.
I hate to suggest this, but think maybe he has decided (subconsciously, I would guess) that his face has take all the beating it can stand? When he got whacked on the opening toss of the Houston (?) game, I said “That ain’t fair. Leave the guy alone”.
I just mentioned this in another thread. Why hasn’t Shedrick developed a jump hook shot?. Im convinced he would be a bigger threat in the paint if he had one
He has trouble establishing and maintaining position with stability. That’s a precursor for effective post moves. He’s improved at it, but still not great. Watch him get moved around when he’s in solid rebounding position.
