There are some recent posts on the Stats Nerd thread about measuring defensive contributions. My takeaway was that no one really thinks that they have a good way of measuring defensive performance.

Thereās a compilation of stuff you can look at that will definitely tell if a guy is exceptional. But if you want understand anything under that, the quant metrics donāt tell you much.
My read from eye test is that Rohde dawg is very good positionally - stays in front of his guy. Contests shots. Has some length when heās guarding smaller guys that is disruptive. He doesnāt create a ton of steals or blocks (steals he was pretty good at first part of season and last season - but heās gotten more conservative/less risky recently). He also has limitations athletically so he can stay in front of your wing scorer but wonāt make life hell for him a la Deandre Hunter and Brogdon. He also is pretty solid in packline on reads and help coverage.
For a Virginia second year, Iād rate him as āgoodā to āvery good.ā Heās a slight step ahead of iMac.

If a guyās exceptional, you donāt really need metrics to tell you that, and if the metrics sort of suck for everyone else then are the existing metrics really good for much?
I have a similar take on Ro-dawg, heās mostly solid within the system but hasnāt brought much extra to the table. IMO, itās that coupled with CTBās first do no harm philosophy that explains his playing time.

Idea: Have a thread here (maybe this one) thatās set up to auto-populate with Tu twitter posts as they happen. Iām sure thereās some AI bot that can do the trick. People can respond and talk about his takes. win win win.
