⛹️‍♂️ Andrew Rohde - Official Thread

Weird that the author doesn’t know what day of the week it is!

@haney what’s your initial take on the fit? Or are you just waiting to see which lineup he’s in so you can not like it?

Betting @haney is pleased with Rohde’s height and length, but taking a wait-and-see on the other core competencies (3-pt shooting and athleticism).

The bright side? He can work to improve his shooting. The height/length might improve, but feels sufficient already. I see him creating for himself in the Summit, but it’s hard to project.

But, is he a dawg? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Yeah, at minimum, he’s a nice piece. I’m a bit skeptical on some of the more optimistic upside (have seen some “NBA upside” stuff). Would be nice, but let’s make sure it all translates to the ACC first. Need to see what pieces we have around him and how it all fits (so I can decide which one I hate the most, of course). I can’t tell much, though. Basically guessing.

Also, would be nice if he’s not done growing

Sales pitch: a Harris/Rohde/Cain backcourt allows Tony to keep his preferred 2-PG lineup on the court AT ALL TIMES

This is what I keep hammering home to people when they are worried about the 32% from 3. He was having to create a lot of his own shots! He won’t have to do that as much here!

I feel like we were saying the same thing when we got Harris; that they will see efficiency improvements here when they don’t have to create for themselves all the time.

I am wondering if we might have found a portal niche. Anybody remember if this was the initial take on Gardner? Has this been our niche and I missed it?

Nice thing is you know high-usage creators will not shy away from the open looks we pass up at times. I’m looking forward to that from our backcourt.

Jayden had his 2nd and 3rd best shooting percentages at UVA out of his 5 years, and his 1st and 3rd best efficiencies. His last year at ECU was by far his worst in both categories.

Yeah, his rebounding got a little worse (per possession, which makes sense, both his teammates and opponents were likely bigger and more athletic at UVA, but he also turned the ball over a lot less despite similar usage%.

His FG% being 6th nationally among freshmen stands out. More optimism he is at the very least the 36% 3 point shooter he was in the New Year

This is my second biggest point. My biggest one about the worry about shooting 32% last year was he shot 33%:

55-166 .331

Also, not sure it’s been discussed, but he was on the kenpom All-Summit Team (5th overall), which takes into account ORtg, USAGE, team performance, probably a few other things.

I am super high on Rohde from his stats. I think his usage drops to around 20% here next year and his ORtg hits 115. If his defense is good, he is a great piece. And we get him for 3 years.

Depends if you count the non D-1 competition, I think. Sports reference does (hence 32%) and KenPom doesn’t (hence 33%).

He definitely fits the TB prime directive for perimeter players on offense, which is to be well-rounded (aka “complete”). Maybe he’s a less-defensively talented, but more offensively-capable version of Devon? Doesn’t really blow by guys, but he’s got a solid handle and uses his frame to burrow towards the rim. I like how he relocates off the ball in the highlights, like when he passes it to the inside and quickly finds space to get the ball back for a three; that’s something he’ll be doing a lot here.

Think that’s the hope. Ty is a bit much lol

In my opinion there’s a difference in comparing the role vs. comparing the player. I think Ty’s role could fit him perfect, although becoming the level of player Ty was will be a much more difficult ask.

Even that I think Dev’s role is more realistic. Cover the opponents biggest guard and secondary ballhandler on offense. I don’t see Rohde ever being the primary initiator on offense à la Ty or London

Well if Reece doesn’t come back who do you think will be our backup pointguard? iMAC? Gertrude?

Blue Cain? (Hopefully).

Rohde

Multiple combo guards together like it was in the London era.

Also Dev played a decent amount of PG. I’m saying Rohde’s PG usage will resemble Dev or Brogdon rather than Ty. When I say he’ll never be the primary initiator I don’t mean he’ll never initiate any possession. Just overall he won’t be the primary PG like Ty and London were.

Yep, my money’s on the guy who had the 3rd best assist ratio in the Summit League last year and posted a 3.9-1.9 A-TO ratio in conference play.
