⛹ Anthony Robinson Official Thread

I want to not redshirt him but I think the convo should be like this:

“We have a crowded frontcourt this year, and for all intents and purposes, you are insurance this year, be ready, work hard and there could be a few minutes but mostly write off playing this year” then if the kid wants to redshirt himself that is great. But also, in the worst case where ARob has to play because Minor twists his ankle or something, we probably want him bought in a bit more than the normal redshirt?

Exactly. THANK YOU

Seems like the convo that UVa has with their potential Rs

Yeah I get it but why do we need to not redshirt him. Trust me, I REALLY get it with top 100 core guys. But I see no harm in wanting to do that with a guy like this.

My point is that I like the pickup but I really don’t care if he redshirts or not. He’s not THAT important to me either way.

I think there are some fine reasons to RS this kid, but I don’t think “he probably won’t play barely any” is a good reason. If I were Tony I’d ban them for a couple years and have a rethink, but if he’s not gonna do that, then it makes some sense to RS this kid. He seems very raw

Again, putting RS as the default, and I have to argue against it, is basically my isssue. Our default should be to play kids the normal amount, and make RS the (once in a while) special case.

Also I think there are going to be more Kadins/Caffaros in the future where they spend their four years, get a degree and if they redshirted/have the extra year will consider trying another pasture

I get what you’re saying, and agree. I think that it makes sense in this case since we don’t need him day 1, AND he’s a developmental type of big. If he’s going to contribute, it’s going to be later. So it makes sense for us to do it specifically with this guy.

I agree with your point though. If Reece were to come back and we got Blue Cain, I wouldn’t want Cain to redshirt, even if he wasn’t going to play much.

For sure. I think this is that kind of special case though.

Exactly. If they aren’t good enough to play, GREAT! They sit the bench and keep it moving and maybe play as upperclassmen. That’s how this works.

I just don’t get being “not thrilled” by picking up a guy like this with the measurables and upside given it’s like our 11th or 12th scholarship. It’s the perfect profile of a guy we SHOULD take under the circumstances. And it’s incredibly low risk.

Can’t think of a single con

Lol I’m with you on Traudt. I think though that getting bigs over 6’8 that aren’t developmental is harder than it sounds. Bigs take longer to contribute and if they’re day 1 ready they’re at a blue blood.

I’ve probably lost the thread here in who said what, but yeah, this kid is the perfect kid to take in this spot. Slightly worried about scaring away 24s, but I think that was a risk anyway with Blake? We still need a long term stretch big (unless that’s Kon?)

Probably helps with 24 in that the staff is not going to focus on pretty unattainable bigs with Blake coming in one year before. Focus energy on other areas that they should have more success.

I swear it’s almost Tony thinks recruiting is every 2 years or something the way we’re moving regarding RS…why RS a guy like this? I just don’t understand it. We can pick up developmental bigs each year fairly easily and just start a freaking development big pipeline. No need to RS and keep all these guys around like a retirement home. There’s a thing called the law of marginal returns…and we just experienced this the last few years. Is it worth RS all of these players and keeping them in the program for 5 years etc for just marginal development? What’s the cost? etc etc etc so many reasons NOT to keep RS these guys

My only addition is that some kids may really want to redshirt. If they need development, a redshirt gives you an extra year to potentially improve your stock … or if you’re good enough 4 years in you go pro with a degree. It’s a pull that Virginia operates like they do for some bigs, and sort of silly we talk like kids don’t have agency in this.

Because there’s a certain segment of the fan base that will bitch and moan about anything. Doesn’t matter what it is.

With this kid, if redshirting was mentioned during the process and he wanted no part of it, he would have gone elsewhere. He signed so he and his family must be okay with it.

If a guy is clearly going to play only garbage time this season, then whether or not he redshirts doesn’t matter to this season at all. What matters is the retention effect. With this particular player, I’m not worried about retention. So I don’t care if he redshirts. If I were worried about retention, or if I thought he had a chance to play more minutes, I would care.

Probably because it has work well.

Yea yea yea, I know…malcom RS and so did Dre and now we all think that is the way. No, we caught lightning in a bottle twice, it’s not the norm. And let me remind you, Dre was THIS CLOSE to transferring the F out of here. We barely even kept him.
