I meant salt, mamadi. It worked well.

RS is a tool. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. For uva it has worked more than it hasnt

First, Shedrick’s transfer wasn’t the result of his redshirt. Traudt’s transfer wasn’t the result of his redshirt. They both did transfer, but for completely different reasons. Shedrick transferred because the path to future playing time for him was becoming a bit obscure. It wasn’t clear, at all. This is the reason most of Virginia’s players have transferred out of the program whether they redshirted or not. Neither Abdur-Rahim, Carson McCorkle, Igor Milicic, Jr., nor Justin McKoy redshirted, and they all transferred because their prospects for significant playing time weren’t very clear. For that matter, the same could be said of Jarrod Reuter and Marial Shayok. I think that Shedrick, McKoy, and Shayok all wanted to be used in different ways, too. It worked for Shayok, not for McKoy, and we’ll soon learns if it works for Shedrick. Redshirts had nothing to do with it. With the exception of Traudt, none of them wanted to sit on the bench, and if they had stayed, that is what they would have done. If a player is on the end of the bench, with few prospects of playing meaningful minutes, the redshirt preserves a year of eligibility, at minimum. Also, for the staff, it means one fewer player in the rotation demanding their attention in practice. Lastly, redshirts worked very well for Devon Hall, Mamadi Diakite, and Jay Huff. Redshirts are not a problem.

Did it work with Salt? I would argue that was very MARGINAL returns. But honestly I have no interest in debating Salt’s RS. Mamandi? OK…for every Mamadi there’s a Kadin. So is that what we want now? Losing Traudt? being on the edge of our seats every year hearing rumors of our top player bouncing the program (like Dre)? No thank you. And he really was THIS close to leaving. That’s not a stable program.

But my main point is why RS a guy like Robinson? What is the payoff? I would argue it’s VERY SLIM in this operational college basketball context now.

so you’ve named 3 successful rs and one that wasn’t. Seems pretty stable. Traudt wanted to RS, what do you want to do force him to play against his wishes?

This kid isn’t Malc or Dre. Not at all. He’s a lottery ticket. If he hits, fantastic. If he doesn’t, he’s holding the 11th schollie, which has historically given us a rounding error’s worth of production as a freshman. I’d bet my season tickets he’s going into this with eyes wide open and is fine with the RS if that’s how it goes down.

For every stock you hold you’re forgoing potential earnings with other investments. Not enough powder to go around. I just don’t see why you keep a guy like this for 5 years as opposed to 4.

Sure. Let’s just ignore all the other variables and go with that take. Meanwhile we’re becoming the “redshirt” program. It’s becoming a thing and not a good thing.

hasn’t hurt recruiting.

You’re delusional. Lol go look at our last 6 years of recruiting. Dead wrong. actually it shows we are behind the mark. But again, facts man. Why bother with facts when you can just drop subjective opinions.

You mean the last two where tony has brought in 7 four star recruits? You seem to be doing great with subjective opinions today.

Anthony Robinson isn’t our top player.

I’ve had this argument before and the general consensus is that the recruiting has been god awful since 2019 until last year. Not going to recycle this argument it’s just boring now.

yeah, cause you’re losing because you don’t have fact.

And that is such a short-sighted view. First, it isn’t very likely he would be part of the primary rotation. It’s unlikely he would contribute anything more than if he did redshirt. Second, there is a chance he might develop, so why waste a year of eligibility? The very worst that can happen is that he becomes a practice player for five years. I don’t have a problem with that. And, just for the record, I would say that Salt, Caffaro, and UVa all benefited from those two redshirts.

Alright. guys, I got a lacrosse game to watch now. If we RS Robinson, I’ll roll my eyes and say “here we go again…” and life goes on.

To Wahooblue, trying to gate-keep Tony’s recruiting record 2018-2022 is just sad man. It’s god awful. And that’s a fact, buddy.

you mean the last 7 four stars in the last two years, sure I will

I’m opposed to redshirting future Hunters and Traudts. I’m in favor of redshirting future Salts and Caffaros.

I’m hearing that Robinson is closer to the Salt/Caffaro end of the spectrum, so it’s not something I’m getting worked up about. If he redshirts that’s fine by me, if he doesn’t, that’s also fine.

Is a 4-star really a 4-star when Tony thinks they are so “developmental” he has to RS them? hmmm

I think it’s fair to meet in the middle by saying that recruiting in ‘17-‘21 was horrible, but recruiting ‘22 and ‘23 has been very good.
