Appreciate the preview. From what you said and the little I’ve seen I’m excited about the potential. The rim protection will come as you said the Packline will set him up for success there and it seems the instincts are there and will taken over once in the position.
The 8/9 and 4Oreb I think you mentioned are also a stat that makes me excited. Hard working and can find his own offense.
I know y’all will be more practical than me, but I am coming from the perspective of a Christian who just happens to attend the same church as Tony, so I see firsthand how he walks the walk, so to speak.
So, having said that, what I really love hearing from our coach is that he says, thinks, and teaches the philosophy that a program can be built and compete a “different way.” I see national guys slam Tony, while praising coaches who are “flashy” and “fired up” yelling at the refs and players – yes, I am talking to you Pat Forde, F68, et.al. – while he doesn’t pay enough attention to them to let them live in his head…and he teaches these young men the same thing.
Am I saying he “walks on water?” Of course not, but the point is that I will take that in a rebuilding year every single time over programs in another “successful” season, watching a coach who wants to be the “flashy” one on the sideline, while teaching his guys nothing about character and being a humble grown man.
Jumping off soapbox!
Thanks @Hooandtrue for sharing that; I enjoyed it.
Great episode. Thanks @DFresh11 for a trip down memory lane. My first memories of Virginia bball is Ralph, Othell, Ricky, etc. but it was the years right around your time that I remember the most fondly and had me so excited to come to Grounds in ’95.
In the age where we need our hits 24/7 and there is all this content-less content and people claiming to be insiders and what not, does it get exhausting following basketball recruiting?
Who is someone you thought we would recruit that we never ended recruiting? And who is someone who you were iffy about that ended up doing really well at UVA?
What is considered a successful recruit or a “bust” recruit/transfer addition? Was Evan Nolte a “bust” or a success? And what about Marial Shayok/Darius Thompson?
Would you rather have Sam Hauser or Akil Mitchell at the 4? And what did UVA mean to both of them at the points in their life when UVA entered their recruitments (in Hauser’s case in the portal, and in Akil’s case as a high schooler with barely any D1 offers)?
