Akbar Waheed is a rising, Class of 2025, 6-6 shooting guard receiving plenty of interest from teams lately. The talented Maryland prospect continues to evolve his game and one of the schools involved is Big East juggernaut program, Villanova. The Georgetown Prep (North Bethesda, MD) star talked with me about his recruitment for VUSports.
Leader Johnson: You have been an impressive prospect for Team Durant? What do you like about playing for such a talented AAU program?
Akbar Waheed: For me I really like the fact that the program feels like a family rather than an organization. A lot of other AAU organizations don’t have the bond that I feel like we have built within each other in all age groups throughout the years. And then the talent on our teams is very great. It allows us to be competitive within ourselves in what we do along with being competitive with each other.
Leader Johnson: What do coaches like about the way you play? What schools have been in contact the most before the contact period?
Akbar Waheed: I have been told by many coaches, that they just feel like I simply just play the right way. I know how to play the game since I’ve been around it for so long. I have been complimented on my feel of the game and the fact that I’m not a one-dimensional player and can do just about everything. Before the contact period I was still hearing from a lot of schools. I heard from Boston College, Villanova, Syracuse, and UVA the most.
Leader Johnson: What did you average last season? What have you improved the most about your game this season?
Akbar Waheed: Last year, as a sophomore, I believe I average around 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists per game. Over the past couple months, I have become a more efficient player and have learned to play within the flow of the game and still get looks for my teammates and I. I am still evolving my game as I will never be a finished product, but my shooting has gone up as well since last season.
2025 is basically: If you are a 6’4 to '6’6 big guard on the east coast, you probably are on UVA’s radar. And then Jacob Wilkins.
I wish I could get paid to be so wrong all the time. It would be my dream job I think.
Have you thought about officiating?
Gonzaga, Virginia, and Jesus ties. We win with 2 out of 3.
Ok, weird story.
So Facebook has the “Friends You May Know” feature, and I was killing time scrolling through last night, and a first name (different last name) and face looked a little familiar and had a couple of mutual family friends. I open her page, and realize who it is. Cousins a couple of times removed (our parents are cousins), and I hadn’t seen her in probably 35 years since we were kids, but Chance Mallory’s mom.
Guess I’ll follow his recruitment a little closer now.
And by following you mean influencing 
If your parent and his mom’s parent are cousins, then she’s your second cousin and Chance is your second cousin once removed.
(It’s kinda wild how people who really aren’t very far at all from you on a family tree can be complete strangers to you. Reminder, kids: when dating someone, check their recent ancestry.)
There’s a 2025 point guard on Westtown who Vandross started following on twitter (along with his dad).
Not sure what to make of 2025 pgs being something we are scouting hard (between this kid, KJ Kochran at Dunn’s old HS, and Chance Mallory).
Staff want multiple pgs on the roster but is it a lack of confidence with who is already on roster in being ball handlers?
