Panic probably isn’t the word, but the timing makes it seem like he was clearly a fallback plan. He could have been hired weeks ago if he was the guy, but instead they wait til after the final 4 games and a day before the portal opened? Kinda seems like they decided they had to have a guy before the portal opened and he was the best option available. Cant imagine “no meaningful college experience” was on their wish list at the beginning of the process.

Lol Heitner in there trolling as the first reply (at least the first one that shows for me)

If you had the same question I did (“Wait, is he the highest paid coach in CBB?”), the answer is “almost”:

The University of North Carolina and Michael Malone have finalized a six-year deal that will pay the NBA Champion head coach an average of $8.3 million dollars per year, according to a source. That will make Malone the second-highest paid college basketball coach in the country behind Kansas’ Bill Self. Malone’s salary for the 2026-27 basketball season will be $7.5 million.

A salary cut from his time at Denver ($12M/yr), though I guess when one wins a NBA title, you get some good raises:

I’ll give UNC credit for this in that it’ll be easier to move on from him than it was Hubert if he sucks. Could be a lot worse for a panic hire, and it feels more thoughtful and intentional than Billy Donovan.

First hire (I think?) for a Malone assistant seems like a good one recruiting-wise

Arkansas and Kentucky insiders say Cal was the closer and that while Martin was good at identifying talent and getting in the door, he was a shitty closer and a worse coach.

Not sure if they’ve announced already, but Tate Frazier on the Basket Under Review pod said that they were gonna have some holdovers from Hubert’s staff, like Sean May.

And Pat Sullivan?

Good for Coach O

Yeah Cal is the only recruiter that matters on Cal’s staffs. Hard pass on thinking any of those guys will provide a recruiting boost beyond the Carolina one. Seems like a lazy hire tbh, they worked together back 20 years ago. Feels like he should be thinking bigger.

Love O but not sure how much longer Mike Jones has there. Hopefully wins this year

Wait, is Jamal still there? Or is this a bit of a double edged sword?

ODU should have hired Robert Jones at NSU. Not sure he would leave, but he’s the perfect coach there.

Thanks much @Hooandtrue !

I am glad to know he is getting another opportunity. Things were real quiet for him over the last year.

Speaking from being around that program a little bit, they’re gonna give that guy a lot of time. He’s beloved at ODU so if they have to give him year four to see if he can win they will do it. They are also TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT on money so financially they’re gonna do everything possible to not have to make another coaching change this soon after.

Just a bit, yes. Jamal left

This is the school that just lost their coach because of lack of funding for the roster:

WOW! Is that real? That’s hard to believe.

The guy who posted it is the agent of this Campbell player, so would guess it’s legit:
