⛹ Dai Dai Ames - Official Thread

There were things they did that I thought were really effective, tbh. Allowed most everyone on the floor to create off the bounce.

Just like Parker Bjokrlund created apps.

Maybe if Reece!! Stayed in NBA stuff Rohde could have looked much different. But I kinda doubt it

Edit: I thought early early in season Rohde looked like he was just trying to fit in as the new guy that earned a starting role and played 31mpg But he never did much with taking the next step with all those minutes

I think there’s a lot of truth to that. Wouldn’t be surprised if Rohde felt some imposter syndrome jumping up like that and then got paralyzed by fear. Also assume that in his gut he knew he wasn’t up to the level and just froze

I thought Rohde was ready to break out after the Texas A&M and Syracuse games. He scored in double figures in both and looked like he was getting more comfortable, albeit still not terribly efficiently. But then I think he was hobbled a little bit by his foot and regressed with time.

Remember HGN saying that Rohde was really impressing last summer, but I think he just completely lost his confidence plus never really was playing the right role, and things just never translated. Also he probably wasn’t completely up to par on S&C, couple that with the foot, and there’s plenty of things to point to as to why he struggled.

I’ll hold out hope that he can be a useful piece for us as I think he’s got a great feel for the game, but I’m not sure we see that unless the offense changes

Rohde should’ve been redshirting last year, then in a 6th man role this coming season as a redshirt sophomore, then ready to compete for two years as a potential starter afterwards.

The instant-eligibility temptation (both for Rohde, who was confident and jonesing to play, and for Bennett who needed healthy bodies) was a long term disservice in this case. Five years ago a guy like Rohde would’ve had a much more conducive development timeline and more reasonable expectations from fans and coaches alike.

Rohde would have been better off in that Creighton offense - rhythm based, high volume.

I don’t think he is ACC starting caliber, but we asked him to take set threes (w/o volume) and drive on a set/packed in defense while running left-to-right (as opposed to downhill).

Rohde may not be good, but man did our HOF coach make some bad personnel decisions and/or design a poor offense.

I think you’re forgetting how many wide open threes he passed up because he was shook from performing like a YMCA bench player. The volume was there if he wanted it to be.

The assistants have to share some blame for the putrid offense too. Sorry not sorry.

Man, hadn’t checked in for a little, and was surprised how much Dai Dai chatter had occurred…

All of these posts ARE about Dai Dai because opinions about Dai Dai are really posts about whether Tony will change the offense and you can’t really have an opinion about whether Tony will change the offense without having an opinion on what he did with it last year and how he has used and perhaps will use Taine and Rohde.

So welcome back to the Dai Dai thread and please feel free to make any posts about Dai Dai (that is - our offense in general, including thoughts on Taine and Rohde)

Here’s my Dai Dai optimism case: KState was a fairly mediocre offensive team overall last season, and he was often in lineups that were spacing constrained. He played a lot with two high-usage, mediocre-shooting guards Tylor Perry (pretty good player who had a down shooting year from 3) and Cam Carter (more of a straight minus on offense), and either two non-shooting bigs or with Arthur Kaluma as a high-usage wing forward who also is only an average threat from 3.

Of course he was part of their shooting struggles, but he was a slight plus by on-offs…and the few times he got freed from the yoke of Cam Carter their offense was actually good (defense took a hit though).

The turnovers aren’t ideal, but judging on Tang’s first two years, he’s kinda like the anti-Tony in terms of being completely indifferent to turnovers by his players. (If I can be a little churlish, I might note that Dai Dai’s turnovers might even be seen as positive by folks who think Tony has throttled the risk-taking too much with his approach).

Churl away my good man!

Good to know about the on/off stats and other line up pieces.

If I can be a little (okay, a lot) pedantic, I might note that Dai Dai didn’t play for Tony when he had those turnovers. Like, did Rohde’s success with the DHO tell us anything about how he was used here? You’d have been better off not knowing that bit if info to understand how Tony used him.

So what are you implying I should take away from Dai Dai’s turnover rate?

That it may have been a function of doing what his coach asked him to do in terms of risk taking, rather than reflecting an global deficit in ball security. Conversely, transfers into UVA under Bennett getting suddenly better at limiting turnovers* is probably more about the coach than what the player is doing.

Again…trying to make the optimistic (“hopium”) case.

*pending me checking if this is actually true in the data.

I’m at acceptance now.

This chain is incredible. Love that he even wore it in his most recent post for his McDonald’s partnership.

Hauser by far the best college player on that list… and he was confident enough not to care to change his game.

Vander Plas 14.4 vs 9.9
Franklin 20.1 vs 12.2
