Oh i know. Poor Jerry really gets messed up sometimes. I just said that because of all the talk about Harris
I look at him as a relief guy but that wasnāt mentioned in the earlier conversations
When we landed Kihei, Iām guessing most thought heād also be a 15 mpg relief guy who would back-up Ty and then maybe help ease the transition to the next PG. Now, five years later, I think he has, or is closing in on, the record for most minutes ever played by any Hoo. So hard to know how things will play out, even if we think itās obvious to start.
(But correct me if Iām wrong about how Kihei was seen when we first landed him).
Looking at Bennettās history of incoming transfers, all of them have started or had 6th/7th man type minutes except Johnson who wasnāt a regular starter at Kansas State or Rutgers before transferring here. Harris isnāt coming here to ride the pine. Hopefully heās not a 35 mpg guy, but heās not coming here to play 15 mpg either.
Yeah, Iād say so. Which of those points do you disagree with?

1/3 of the way through the season Kihei is posting the highest assist rate, free throw rate, and 3FG% of his career, along with the lowest TO% and fouls committed rates of his career. His 2FG% is above his career average and his minutes/game are the second lowest of his career (though only narrowly behind his Jun⦠3rd year and his minutes will probably go up in conference play so thereās a good chance itāll end up 3rd). I donāt know how his season stacks up defensively but Iād be surprised if its worse than his average. So, Iād say heās exceeding most expectations.

iMac is averaging over 18 minutes/game (and Dunn close to 10) and has played in every game (and Dunn every game except the opener). Seems like plenty of regular playing time. Could quibble over Dunn, but its night and day compared with the 3 Ms last year.

Beekman WAS blooming, then he got hurt. Maybe its a nagging injury and the bloom doesnāt come back this year, but its not Kiheiās fault he got hurt.
My guess is that the plan for Harris right now isnāt any more specific than: Hey, hereās a guy whoās available and has some skills at a position of need, letās bring him in and see what he gives us. I wouldnāt overthink it past that.
And since every thread devolves into a discussion about Kihei: He certainly wasnāt recruited with the idea that heād be a starter his first year. For that matter, neither was London. They both earned it with their practice and their play.
I really feel like the one guy we donāt talk about enough is Kihei Clark. Heās hardly ever mentioned.
So here is how I see the āintentā with Harris, though recognizing that the coachesā āintentā isnāt always how things end up:
5 or 6 or has it been 15? years ago Tony had an excellent roster returning including one of the best point guards (the best IMO) to ever wear a UVA uniform (Ty Jerome) and he recruited a lightly regarded, diminutive PG whose name escapes me and everyone scoffed including yours truly. The purpose was to bring someone in who can set the edge on the defense against opposing point guards and guard the ball (plus give Ty a breather on occasion, etc., etc.,). After the first time I saw him on the floor, I got it and realized Tony was one of the great BB coaches in America and my perfect track record of being wrong was under no threat of changing.
I see Harris as filling that same role as a worst case scenario with a little plus on the offensive end. Heās a guy that can set the defense at the point. Now Tony can find his Ty Jerome 2.
Going back to the intent thing, the question is whether Tony can convince Ty 2 that he has a clear path to the floor with the Inferno on the roster for several years.
Anyone ever find his catch and shoot %ās? As interested in that as his overall 3% given those are the kind of 3ās heāll take here
If one wants to compare him only to himself, one is welcome.
2nd highest assist rate - was a bit better in 2020.
2nd highest steal rate - was a bit better in 2020
Best FT rate by far - big plus so far.
Best TO rate - a plus.
I simply compare him to guys who play as much as he does⦠does his performance merit 35min a game?
Also I just assumed a 5th year guy should be better as they are playing a 5th year never before afforded guys ⦠and are that much older than opponents.
So question for you⦠since you said the sample size is enough to tell for Clark - is it enough to tell for the other 2 5th years that they have regressed as 5th years?
p.s. - Iāve never blamed Clark for playing so much ⦠thatās on Tony.
Iām not a fan of even our best players playing more than 32-33 min per gameā¦
p.p.s Clark is averaging 36 minutes per game in the 7 non blowouts ⦠that is the same as last year and 2nd highest of his career

I mean, all the claims are strictly about whatās happened so far, with no assertions about the season ahead, so⦠yes, we do know whatās happened so far.
Right.
But my point wasnāt that Kihei is having a great season. It was that our Kihei-retention-driven concerns have, for the most part, gone better than feared so far.
The young players arenāt being starved of playing time, Beekman appeared to have figured out how to make the situation work and took a step forward before getting hurt, and while its impossible to know for sure it seems pretty unlikely our PG-recruiting woes for '23 stem from Kihei. Plus, Kihei himself has probably added somewhat more value than expected.
Thatās what I was saying, maybe its just a semantics difference?
Probably just a matter of perspectiveā¦
Letās say Kihei doesnāt come back and we get a Nigel Johnson or Dante Harris to fill that spot this year.
How many minutes a game does he play? Lets say itās the 14 min per game Johnson averaged in ACC play.
Clark is averaging 36 min a game vs all opponents not named Monmouth or Maryland Eastern Shoreā¦
That would be 22 min per game allocated elsewhereā¦
Would Traudt have still redshirted? Man I thought my dream of Reece/Traudt pick and rolls was gonna come true ⦠Now I have doubts it will ever happen.
Would Dunn and or Murray be playing more from the get go?
Hoo knows.
So you donāt think there is a good chance Reece goes to the league? What would be your suggested course of action if that happens?
I think you should operate expecting him to leave and be prepared accordingly. Whether I think he will or not is irrelevant, itās a possibility. And yeah I know you werenāt talking to me.
Weāll know on senior day. If he goes to midcourt and kisses the V sabres like Jerome did on Saltās senior dayā¦he gone.
If Reece goes pro Iād go after the closest thing to Matt Mooney we can find. And beg Chase Coleman to stay. We would then be in great shape to go along with Dante Harris.
Coming back to this, if Dante makes no improvements at all on his 3pt shot he will still look like Steph Curry compared to last nights 3pt shooting LOL
