I know +/- is a loose metric, but that McKneely was 1/9 from the field but +21 whereas Franklin was 0-7 but -24 suggests that there are other things that Mick is doing on the floor to help the team. Same with Dunn, who had few stats at all. But maybe there’s something about spacing that frees up other guys to be effective; or solid defense and limiting a team to one difficult shot; maybe it’s contagious hustle plays.
I don’t mind taking 12 minutes to find out who has a hot hand shooting the ball that night and adjust PT accordingly, but some of the other intangibles should be more transferable from one game to the next and should dictate rotations and PT.
I think what is important is that he can shoot 3s. Tony can probably get as much quality info on that topic by watching him work out as he can by judging his 27% 3 point rate on 179 3s.
That’s not a small sample size for a rotation guy, but it sort of is. If he hits 14 more over two years he looks like an efficient shooter. How many of those shots were end of clock contested looks? How many were half court heaves? I have no idea, but his team was bad which means they weren’t creating good looks for each other and my guess is very few were in-rhythm wide open looks which will be all he will be expected to take and make here.
He also had an atrocious 3/2 assist/turnover rate at Georgetown. But again, he won’t carry that ratio here even if he is really loose with the ball which I doubt. A lot of those stats were as much a result of where he played as anything else.
I also think you have to take into account that Harris played such a big role as a young player. Anywhere else he’s barely seeing the floor because he probably wasn’t ready to contribute on a winning team at that level.
And yeah they do workout transfer recruits on their visits. And it’s real. I know of at least two transfers in the past that have been vetoed after those workouts. Back during the pandemic when they had to recruit transfers without seeing them, that really irritated TB I think. I can remember at least one popular productive high major transfer that year that was vetoed after TB went into deep film study.
Why you include me in that? When I said they can’t possibly shoot that bad again collectively?
p.s. I would be interested to see everyone’s % when shooting open and wide open threes though.
And distance per 3 as well.
I’d like to know why Reece didn’t take that open 3 last night and passed to Kihei instead. Kihei made a good play to get fouled but it all took an extra 2-3 seconds off the clock that we could have used at the end. Edit: come to think of it Kihei getting fouled stopped the clock.
“I just want to go in there and compete and do whatever they ask me to do,” said Harris, who in attendance last Saturday for the Houston game. “I want to play hard like I always do and just try and bring another championship back to Charlottesville, that’s all I can really say right now until I get on grounds and start practicing with the guys and see what my role is with the team.”
He said “grounds.” I like this guy. But what I really liked was this quote:
“It really was an easy decision to commit to Virginia,” Harris told CavsCorner. “Who wouldn’t want to play for Virginia? They are one of the best programs in the country and they have guys that get to the league every year and that is a place I eventually want to get to so it really was a blessing to be able to play for a great institution with a great coach.”
Right? I mean I know I’m a biased fan, but still… right?
Going back years here but the Chukwu big guy who played at Syracuse visited and was passed on, transferred from Providence. And I forget this one’s name now but he was a grad transfer guard from Wake the spring before our national title year. Same kinda thing, he visited and they essentially passed on him. He went to Ohio State, later Braxton Key came available and it all worked out.
Dante is small, which isn’t great, but my guess is he’s at least 2 and probably 3" taller than Kihei (no idea about wingspan) which I think makes a considerable difference.
