Dream Recruits (maybe non-UVA related)

A can of dip would get me

This is the last recruit I had in mind when making this thread.

Isaiah Otyaluk. Wing from North Carolina. Listed at 6ā€™7 but reports heā€™s close to 6ā€™8 and growing. I saw clips of him a few months back when Miles (the nc state 247 writer but also a big contributor to the ā€œHoop Stateā€ network in NC HS basketball). Heā€™s been improving and all the Phenom Hoops guys (Lewis family, Patrick Oā€™Brien) have been tweeting about him a lot.

I actually watched a full game stream when his team played combine academy (the silas demary/Rakease passmore team, not the Shaedon Simpson one) and he has a super high ceiling individually but at the same time still looks like a deer in the headlights trying to operate in a team defensive and offensive scheme.

Heā€™s a kid who can also reclass to 2023 (and most likely redshirt).

If we assume

Dante
McKneely
Dunn
Bond
Traudt
Gertrude (no idea if he redshirts)
Buchanan (shouldnā€™t redshirt but maybe. He mobile and athletic and if we play with less hedging it makes bigs lives much easier)
Kadin

as the likely returners thatā€™s 8

Shaedon Simpson if Taine leaves
Isaiah Otyaluk redshirted (our forward addition)
A point guard (Reed, Bliss, Bennett). Preference is Bennett type as he only has 3 years left and can co-exist with a 2024 pg. Maybe this also opens up the door to Ty Davis and Gertrude future back court loll.
A project big to also redshirt (Bowser, MacVicar) who will be contributing 2-3 years down the road or Maliq Brown from cuse in the portal.

thatā€™s 12 for next season and 11 for 2024 (with no one else bouncing early or transferring which is unlikely. If good players get minutes and develop during a season of playing through their mistakesthey will go pro. Especially if they have the intangibles like 3pt shot, wing span, athleticism)

Youā€™ll have continutty and growing old together as well as not having to rely too heavily on low ceiling transfers becoming a road block for your high ceiling young guys.

I donā€™t like this idea of bringing in a veteran 4/5 transfer when we can just play Traudt and Buchanan and Bond and Dunn in various situations in the front court, deal with the lows and a loss here or there in the non conference in a trade off for a higher ceiling team come march and players developing for the long term. So that they can become veterans.

Get Ty Davis and Jaiden Glover in 2024 and we gucci. Also go 10 deep with the talent.

Heh. ā€œintangibles like 3pt shotā€ lol.

Totally agree with your last paragraph.

In your dream scenario you didnā€™t know if Gertrude redshirted or not. I donā€™t see no possibility that Gertrude redshirts .Heā€™s going pro but just dont know when. I would think or hope he would be in the rotation from the start. His minutes depending on how fast he learns. I do want to say that Iā€™ve been watching sone Shaedon Simpson film and i would love to have him. Also like Otyalukā€™s game too

The ACL tear you donā€™t want to always rush back from though. Weā€™ll see. Versus spending the year strengthing that knee with Mike Curtis to help support it more.

Definitely going to redshirt.

Yea, I know everything depends on that but heā€™s got a year to recover. I also know that kind of injury can be hard to come back from

Because Im stubborn I found all the clips I could of that Bennett kid at NW MO State. Also @BDragon wasnā€™t kidding about powerhouse. NW MO won back to back D2 national titles 2021 and 2022 I had no idea. Also won it in 2017 and 2019 I believe.

His shooting stroke and body type are like Kon Knueppel. But heā€™s more mobile and athletic (his high steal rate is tantilizing on top of everything else). Probably not as good a pure 3pt shooter as Kon Knueppel but his form looks like Konā€™s and the rest of his game is pretty good (5 assists a game, 2.7 A:to ratio).

Kid can definitely play. NW is no joke. Football and basketball they are as good as it gets. The coaching staff has more or less been around for 30+ yrs as former players have taken over for a legendary coach. If youā€™re gonna poach from D2 itā€™s a good pond to fish in.

Lot of talent in that area that just doesnā€™t get the D1 looks because they play for smaller HS and the AAU scene isnt as strong.

I typically watch NW come the tournament but will keep a closer eye on them this year. We have a trip up there next month to celebrate my wifeā€™s 03 team run and Iā€™ll see Bennett in-person.

Isaiah Otyaluk vs Combine academy. Much closer than I expected. You can see his potential while also seeing he has a lot to work on. (his team also played the combine academy regional team and blew them out).

@Hooandtrue this guy on your radar yet?

Nope. I think one of either Vandross or getter follow him (Ive seen the name before) but never seen a clip or nothing. No idea where heā€™s from either

North Carolina. Not a big deal but I just heard through a friend KG reached out to him is all.

Looks like he has been popping off. Former HS teammate of Jahseem Felton (who is also a Kyle Getter prospect)

Reminds me of Ryan McHanon at Louisville. 3pt specialist and good at it. Not sure if he does much else but

  1. Nothing wrong with having one of these on your roster
  2. Im sure he does more than whatā€™s just shown in clips.

Yeah itā€™s fine to have a 3 pt specialist on the team, but I would prefer he not be a massive defensive liability like McMahon was at UL.
