⛹️‍♂️ Elijah Gertrude - Official Thread

Real question. Who the last UVa player to make Espn top 10 highlights? Ty with the fake to the crowd at Duke and 30 foot dagger?

Maybe the Diakite shot against Purdue?

Ah shit. Gotta be too

I’d imagine Reece made top-10 for the three he hit to beat Duke in Cameron.

I also assume that Ryan Dunn has had a top-10 for at least one of his dunks.

If that wasn’t #1, they weren’t paying attention

Dunn poster dunk on the Texas Southern player?

Cory is proly on the Top 10 Committee. He immediately said after Elis play “thats gonna be on sportcenter tonight”

I bet if people still watched ESPN religiously like back in the day this would be an easier question… my first thought when I saw the X play on the top 10 was… they still do a SportsCenter Top 10 every day?

Rohde made #3 back in November with one of his hockey assists.

Gertrude’s job is to make it impossible not to play him. His worst attribute on O is his jumper. His best is his driving. When he’s in, whether it’s the last minute of a blowout or we’re down 30, he needs to run the offense (just keep making the next pass) and drive. He needs to avoid jumpers, especially forced long ones.

He followed this advice the last two minutes (two made layups and one blocked at the rim). He didn’t his first few minutes (clanked badly on a 3 and a step back long 2).

BTW Harris has the worst shot selection ever, so an easy heuristic is do the opposite of what he does.

My fear is that Eli goes 1v1 and scores but Tony doesn’t like it because Eli didn’t run the sides offense shot clock down to 2 seconds and then look for Rohde. I’m only half joking.

I don’t want Tony f’ing up Eli’s god given talent to go get a bucket in the name of “safety first”.

My wife, who knows zero about basketball, even asks why Eli doesn’t play. She was at the Northeastern game and she thought he was the best player on the floor because “he makes things happen and everyone else on UVa stand around or runs around in circles.”

Tony better look at the 2 drives and electric finishes tonight and say to himself “maybe we should be giving him more minutes. Dude guards well, can rebound and can jump out of the gym. We can use that”. But he won’t. He’ll double down on others who are more erratic or don’t actually do anything on the court.

Rant over. Sorry for the bitterness.

Go Hoos. Play free and with JOY. Have fun. Beat UNC.

It’s just hard for me to watch Dante’s minutes when Reece is on the floor and not think what Eli could do in those same minutes. Lets start there at least

Tony is forcing us to watch Harris just so we appreciate Kihei more

I don’t take anything away from Gertrude’s minutes when he only gets to play after the team has already quit and the loss is already locked in. He looked great against Syracuse, a similar level of competition, when he actually got to play when it mattered. Gertrude is exactly what we needed tonight during the 20-0 run and during yet another 0fer from Rohde against laughably pathetic defender Sean Pedulla. But we couldn’t use him because his fate for the season was predetermined in October

CTB singles Harris out for praise (!?) in the post game presser. My slim hopes for Gertrude to get his minutes were extinguished.

Gertrude didn’t play until late in a game we were down by 30+. Your hopes should’ve been extinguished many games ago lol.

May be in the minority but I’m okay with the praise for Harris in the context of him actually giving a shit. Dude was in there until the very end playing his ass off while the rest of the team seemed completely uninterested. That’s got to be what Tony saw too. Hope that doesn’t mean we increase his minutes or take the fact that he was one of the best players last night to mean anything other than everyone else was horrendous and he happened to suck less.

Didn’t see Gertrude play until the final minute but those two takes were exactly why I’m excited about him and frustrated with his lack of PT. He can zig when we have a team full of zaggers (sans Reece). He’s a changeup. Teams are overplaying us and running us off the 3-point line, yet no one can take advantage… EXCEPT that’s kind of exactly what Gertrude is really good at. You’re down double digits early with no hope of coming back. Let’s fucking mix it up and see if Gertrude can provide a spark.

And, although Eli is not a good shooter, he is at least as good as Rohde and Harris on a short pull up jumper (Although the jury is still out about Rohde since he has only shot about 3 all year).
