Fall Recruiting Action

I heard Sheppard on the 2nd and now GWIII on the 7th. Neither here for football games. Duke football game and B/W scrimmage on the 16th. I wonder if anyone will be here that weekend.

They’ve never really used the Blue-White game for recruiting. Bennett likes having them there to see the usual routine, after practices start. Since there’s no urgency with most juniors, October is usually the busiest for visits before they get into their own season.

Bennett seems to struggle conceptually with the idea that people might want to see his team play when they haven’t had a chance in 7 months or so
 Total blind spot.

I don’t think recruits care all that much tho

I doubt it. This is really about me trying to hijack my B/W streaming beef into tangentially related topics.

But probably not entirely unrelated. He just doesn’t see the B/W as a meaningful thing, which is why it’s not streamed, and also why he doesn’t use it for recruiting.

Agree. As much as I love TB, with where we are as a program the B/W game has so much potential as a showcase/event than it’s currently being used as.

To be fair we didn’t have a blue and white scrimmage last season and got the 4 recruits tony wanted most.

Social media could do more but it’s pretty irrelevant to use the blue/white scrimmage to sell our program. They’ll take an unofficial for a game and see our packed arena regardless in an even more exciting atmosphere.

But yes Blue/white scrimmage should be streamed for fans. Make sure to spam all their twitter posts until they get the message lol.

Agree, tying it to recruiting was TIC. But to the extent I have a serious point here, it’s more like the College Gameday thing: if Tony doesn’t want to talk to them, meh, fine. But discouraging his players from participating bugs me. He’s inserting his idiosyncratic preferences for their idiosyncratic preferences. (Discouraging does not mean “you can’t do that”; it’s more subtle, I’m sure.).

For fans or recruits it could be used as hype. I’d love to see it streamed but Anthony Guy Bennett is about as unhype as you can get.

I’m going to beat that drum any chance I get. It’s a nice break from giving them grief about the logos and uniforms.

None of our big three sports (football, men’s hoops, baseball) go out of their way for fan service. It’s a big blind spot due to the nature of the head coaches. AD should push them to open up some but it’s obviously not a priority so we leave a lot of goodwill on the table.

There are ways to open up fan service without involving the coaches at all. We don’t need to be Duke with all the corny fake posts but we can absolutely do more than below the bare minimum. There is a middle ground there and we can’t be outperformed by midmajors in terms of fan service.

But, and I suspect we will never know here, the reason I give Tony grief about this (on message boards, to be clear) is I suspect this (i.e., B/W streaming) is a case of ALL HE HAS TO DO IS GET OUT OF THE WAY, so since it’s almost never streamed, that indicates to me it’s because he actively dislikes it being streamed.

Another example – Nova goes to Spain, every game gets streamed. We go to Spain, same summer, and we have two fans that have to follow the team around paparazzi style to give us preliminary reports on Dre, Ty, Jay, Kyle, Austin, Mamadi.

I think it’s a decision of the head coaches not to do a lot of the fan friendly stuff / more info sharing.

Or we think the head guys won’t like it, so we don’t go the extra mile on some things.

I agree that we don’t want to be a Duke with the fake Brotherhood junk or a cult of personality like with K. Both of those are nauseating. We also don’t need to be like football under London where there were very few secrets.

Now if we could just get him to appreciate that it should be orange/blue, including orange trim on the uni’s. I’d let it slip if he would just give bronco some pointers on how to practice defense.

Actually, I suspect Coach Bennett doesn’t struggle with the concept in the least, however I also suspect he has higher priorities. Or, at least, priorities he feels are higher. I also imagine I would just as soon he pursue matters as he has prioritized them. It seems to be working.

This is incorrect. His priorities should be my priorities. As should everyone’s.

Yeah, I wish CTB did some things differently. You know, all the things he does well and then the other things how I’d want him to do it. Of course, then he wouldn’t be CTB, he’d be someone else. And I’m sure he’s thought about all of this and has reasons for not wanting to do them (he probably sees them as counter to the culture he wants), so there we go.
