Fall Recruiting Continued

Really? Who at UVA in the CTB era was good at that?
I would say the best finisher with his off hand at UVA in recent memory was Devon Hall … and he’s not even a top 10 player under CTB.

The Minnesota mod on Freitag’s shortcomings. He is honest that Minnesota isn’t recruiting him moreso because Freitag doesn’t want to go to Minnesota. (but they also like a kid instate at the pg spot more since they dont think of Freitag as a running-the-team pg)

"If the Gophers land Asuma (another top 100 pg in Minnesota/Minnesota vs Iowa State battle), I have no issue with it. If they don’t they better have a heck of a second option. Daniel has so so much natural talent. But he really isn’t a true one at 6’1. He will really need to take some steps to maintain the ranking he has. That said, he has earned it up to this point and he does deserve the right to work on his big potential so we will see where it goes. Daniel has a wide receiver mentality and I think he is perfect for that position in college physically and mentally. As a hooper, he is a 6’1 guard. I know he is listed at 6’3 some places, he is 6’1. With a hell of a scoring ability with the ball. Maybe not an elite shooter in the shooting guard traditional way, more of a use his physical ability to score, use his dribble separation skills to score type guy. He shoots it really well off the separation.

I like Freitag A LOT. But at the same time I dont think he is our next “here is the team, take the reigns” pg. He would be the perfect secondary ball handler to put at the 2 with his long wingspan beside a true floor general type. Both play off the ball at times. No one dimensional shooters (which by itself would be a huge relief to our guard play the last few years lol). Freitag and Ty Davis would be like peanut butter and Jelly at the 1-2 spots.

One dimensional players also why Im not a fan of Knueppel (you can add shooters without detrimenting our athleticism to run packline even further).

Im curious what the staff thinks. I get the sense they think of him as a lead guard.

Whoa whoa nelly …methinks you haven’t watched enough tape of the Kon yet

I was always confused whether Dev was right or left handed!

This is a great question. Lost art for right hand guys finishing lefty?

That description sounds a lot like Trevor Keels (though Keels was taller)

nah completely different players

Was Dev one of those people who shoots with his off hand? Like LeBron

Wait is Lebron lefty? Hahahaha. No clue on Dev but seemed to love right handed layups I thought

Yup! He says he pretty amphibious (couldn’t find that old video on a quick search) but he writes and throws left handed.

Tahaad Pettiford is right handed but shoots it lefty. So strange

I’d guess it comes from mirroring adults as little kids?

Great question and am not sure. To your point my 7 year old daughter was swinging a baseball bat right handed but not hitting great. I turmed her lefty and she smashes it. She writes righty but sometimes changes to her left. Fascinating to me

I do think you can teach yourself to use either hand/ foot

For anyone that knows Ganon Baker he taught himself at a young age to shoot lefty and was legit amphibious back in the day

When I was little, I was right handed. My sister was left handed. I watched her play soccer and ended up left footed. So, kick/punt/etc with left foot and shoot/write/etc with right hand. I feel like a huge part is exposing kids to both early if you want to be more ambidextrous. 100% agree

One dimensional is harsh. He’s a complete offensive player. Could work a little more on beating his man off the dribble. Could work on everything really cause he’s only a HS kid lol. I mean one dimensional moreso in terms of offense/defense. Not a two-way player. I feel like there are ways to add offensively without losing that athleticism needed on the defensive end, especially in this day and age where you need to be able to defend multiple positions.

My ideal line up is sorta what the pelicans are in the NBA. 1 or 2 combo guards on the floor. Valencunis as the big man on the roster and then everyone else is just wings. Wing buffet. Wings with all the versatility.

That’s impossible to get in college though lol
