Clairborn at Wake. From King William. I don’t think the middle peninsula is a hot recruiting area, so I don’t think that should factor much into the potential investment.

Malachi Fields officially in the portal.

Was he a Hagans recruit? Lot of Penn State fans in the comments

And Kam Robinson is from Essex County on the MP.

His value on the open market would be huge, no matter where he’s from.

Hagans was the first college coach to reach out to him, and Hagans and Mendenhall gave him his offer in person on Junior Day.

With Fields gone, here’s our WR situation:

Elliott has never carried more than 12 scholarship WR. With Fields gone, we’re at 9.

Class Player Measurements Stats
Sr Andre Greene 6’2" 202# 11 GP / 8 GS, 9 rec, 74 yds, 0 TD
RS Jr Trell Harris 6’0" 198# 4 GP / 4 GS, 15 rec, 221 yds, 2 TD
RS Jr Eli Wood (PWO) 6’1" 202# 11 GP / 0 GS, 3 rec, 15 yds, 0 TD
Jr Suderian Harrison 5’9" 181 # 8 GP / 0 GS, 11 rec, 99 yds, 0 TD
RS So TyLyric Coleman 6’2" 194# 7 GP / 0 GS, 4 rec, 33 yds, 0 TD
So Kam Courtney 5’10" 193# 9 GP / 2 GS, 12 rec, 114 yds, 0 TD
RS Fr Triston Ward 6’1" 183# 0 GP - 3-star 85 grade in 2024
Fr Dillon Newton-Short 6’1" 195# 3-star 86 grade - early enrollee
Fr Isaiah Robinson 6’2" 180# 3-star 86 grade
Fr Josiah Abdulla 5’10" 175# 3-star 88 grade - early enrollee

Takeaways:

Trell Harris and Kam Courtney are options to start Z and slot, respectively, though neither are sure things, betting on health and upside with both. Plenty of guys who can provide depth and compete, but no one who’s really going into the offseason as the surefire WR1. Hopefully the addition of Morris helps land a couple guys, ideally two starters. With Malachi gone there’s no obvious WR-X big possession option at all.

I know I’ve cried more about linemen, but that isn’t to say WR isn’t a massive need. Just that it doesn’t matter who we get at WR if we don’t shore up the OL first such that the QB has time to get the ball to the wideouts.

Need a big target. Harrison when healthy is pretty solid.

So far it seems Fields is generating interest from at least Penn State, ND and Oregon. I imagine all the big programs will be in on him. He’s ranked at least in the top 20 of all players available in the portal I’d think.

Going to get to play for a big time program, win lots of games, play on national TV on more easy to find channels and make a good chunk of change for a semester of school. Good for him.

I really thought he’d be an early 3rd day draft pick, but I guess after the 1st round, the only guaranteed money the players get is the signing bonus and if you look at Malik’s contract, that was only 200k and he’ll make 800k base salary for this season, but he can be cut at any time and none of his future years (or even weeks remaining this season) are guaranteed.

If Fields can earn 300-500k in college for next season, I’d make the same decision as him probably.

If it were about $300-$500K, and he’s a Cville kid, it’s a shame we cannot find local businesses and billionaires willing to pony up to keep him. His face should be everywhere around town.

That’s our inherent advantage with him. And if we can’t do it for Fields, it’s not a good sign for what we could (or couldn’t) do for Mallory.

300-500k is just my guess based on good experienced P4 starting QBs going for above 1 mil and extrapolating the value of a similar high end WR based on relative values in the NFL.

A top starting QB makes in the 50-60 mil range and a #1 WR type makes in the 25-35 mil range. So I’m guessing a WR makes half of a QB. Could be more, I honestly have no idea. It’s at least enough that he’d rather do this than be a 3rd day draft pick.

But 2 things to paying Fields to stay home 1) he’s been here all his life, he might just want something different if the money’s the same anywhere he wants to go and 2) I don’t think we don’t have the money, I think we’d have to really overpay and the money’s probably better spent on other positions that can generate a better return for us.

I see the point you’re trying to make, but I think a non-QB football player on a bad team playing for a program that has never been particularly good is pretty different from a guy like Chance who would have the ball in his hands all the time on a quality TBD team in a pretty good program.

Either way I’m happy for Malachi. I think he’ll end up at PSU who could desperately use help at WR and has a pretty good QB in Allar coming back next year. I’ll be rooting for him where ever he lands, he needs to go try and show out in a competently run offense and try to get drafted higher. I definitely think he is an NFL caliber player.

Don’t know if someone’s said it but don’t feel any shade towards Malachi nor the program for his departure. Feels like Nick Jackson leaving after doing everything he felt he could in a UVA uniform.

(I hope we are not reliving this with a certain Poca, WV native in 3-4 months)

Agree. Like Ray Borque leaving the Bruins back in the day.

Why? I’m perfectly fine with him finding a landing spot … we need a clean break. For me same for Isaac, Blake and Rohde … give me the guys who still have their innate natural aggression

Why do I not want McKneely to transfer?

If you don’t have a Ray Borque, just use whatever you have laying around the house

If Oregon wants him my guess is he is closer to 1 million guy. And I cant believe I am saying that

Are we in on the NOVA USC DL transfer, Elijah Hughes?

Entered with a Do Not Contact tag, so it’s likely he already knows where he’s headed.
