I think the pool of players in the portal is gonna have 2 major issues.

theresās probably a bunch of players who started school in 2020 and are entering their 6th year as career backups looking for 1 last shot at playing time or as a ticket to getting a year of grad school paid for. These guys are older, but not very experienced and probably not that good.

because of the extra Covid eligibility, lots of schools ran out of scholarships in 21 and 22 (and to a lesser extent 23), so they brought in much smaller freshman classes. These classes would be prime mid-career change of scenery candidates and thereās fewer of them than there otherwise would be.

On the subject of āretiredā players in the portalā¦theyāre probably not. These websites just throw any sort of departures into the transfer listā¦itās simpler. And itās also part of the reason for the inflated transfer statistics at lower levels where itās more common for players to just give up the sport.

Using the NCAAās data, 30% of entrants in 2023 are āactive entrantsā still, which is the clue that they left the NCAA or football all together. And about 30% of portal entrants in FBS were unaided the school they left (not the same 30% as those still active; though more than half of the entrants still active were unaided).

I went and updated the first post in the thread to include the new offers I missed, didnāt wanna spam the thread with an individual post for each one.
The ones that caught my eye were Kameron Olds, a productive edge rusher from Kent State who is rated as a four star transfer on 247 and DT Sheffield, leading receiver for North Texas this past season and teammate of Chandler Morris.
Also saw that Ethan Davies entered the portal from our side.
Package deal perhaps?
Who are we selling WRs on as their QB? Do we have a QB who can play next year on the roster? I legitimately donāt know, so forgive the ignorance.

Yeah I think we are going to need to secure the QB before we land any legit wide receivers unless our bag is just that full.
Weāve got sneak specialist Grady, former New Mexico State transfer Gavin Frakes who attempted 110 passes in 2022 and hasnāt played since, and two first years signed (Cole Geer and Bjorn Jurgensen). Geer broke his hand early in the season and didnāt play much QB. Jurgensen actually looks pretty good but heās only a high 3 star, so heās not pulling any in transfers on his own.
