Football Coaching Hot Board

That’s why he’ll bring along Tahj Boyd. From the 757. Kids today definitely know him. Will reap big rewards.

We settled. Hope it works out!

How is a guy who called plays in the last two CFP playoffs (including a national championship) and was interviewed for an NFL job settling but Dex wouldn’t have been?

Well Virginia does have higher academic standards - maybe its crazy to have a coach that actually knows something about higher academic achievement.

You can understand and appreciate high academic standards and still have a low gpa. That’s just a number

When your only competition is Duke, you’re settling.’could still be a fine coach but his stock is down from those accolades you mentioned.

Dex was a booom or bust candidate. No settling for average he was likely gone after a couple years or would have stayed -

Are people upset that the football coach we may hire didn’t have a high enough GPA?

Seems that way. LOL

Dex was a total reach. He’s a 20 year journeyman assistant with mild success.

Tony Elliott is a more qualified candidate by literally any measure aside from “having your jersey retired at UVA.”

Elliott is a Clemson alum. Best case is they pry him back in 5-6 years. Means we will have had a lot of success. And hopefully by then Dex will at least have had a season of play calling under his belt and will be ready to step in.

Still doesn’t make sense to me. Why is Elliot not boom or bust? What is the difference? At least Elliot had been interviewed elsewhere. This was Dex’s first D1 head coaching interview.

Didn’t say you couldn’t - but I think you can relate to the prospective student athletes better if you’ve walked the walk and talked the talk.
I think part of what made George Welsh attractive to UVA (and a good coach) was that he had experienced the not exactly ordinary requirements at the Naval Academy - that in some ways translated to some of the obstacles at UVA. I was hoping that applied in a similar fashion to Bronco.

I should have stayed at William and Mary

I always thought Jimmye Laycock would have been a good coach to follow GW… they almost had a deal for him to come as OC and then be the coach in waiting - but it probably worked out better for Jimmye to stay in Williamsburg.

That would be the most UVA thing ever

Anything is possible and I’m sure ir can only help.

That said as a recruit coming out of HS I never thought to ask or care about the coaches academic records. And 20 yrs later as a coach I never had a recruit inquire about it or seek my empathy for understanding the academic rigors they faced.

LOL missing the point entirely. I’ll take the under.

I don’t think it’s the recruit side. I think it’s handling admin and the very prickly academics

I would say that Elliot has a higher Floor than Dex at the minimum AND has alot of contacts and experience, plus recruiting prowess as well to make him a high upside candidate.

While I don’t think the GPA matters for X&Os, it’s an impressive achievement for him given his challenging upbringing. It says a lot about his perseverance and character which do matter for running a football game.

Elliott turned down Tennessee, South Carolina and Auburn last year. I think he could’ve had any of those jobs if he wanted them.

Isn’t his resume what we wished Dex had? A successful lead coordinator for several years and being mentioned as a possible candidate at multiple other schools over multiple years?
