He has a hell of a life story to share with, relate to and inspire his players and recruits.
What was he offered this year ? Was his success in relation to Lawrence? This years downside provides a valid question. I think he has a high floor because he’s a bright coach and has ton of experience with a great coach but I am worried about someone who hasn’t coached outside of South Carolina.
I’m just catching up on today’s activities. So is it going to be Elliot for sure or are we hearing this from Jerry Ratcliffe?
I worry about his lack of stops and his ability to build out coaching connects especially with venable starting out his own staff this year. I’m unsure of his recruiting prowess outside of Clemson. Clemson recruits itself. Id prefer a guy like Huff has put together a solid class for Marshal without the glow of a blue blood
Those are all skills and nuance you learn from experience not from a class that goes towards your GPA.
My whole point about the GPA thing was a jab at Surf and the string of elitist that comes along with UVa fandom thinking it necessary to even mention his GPA.
I don’t actually care one way or another.
You know who Elliott’s profile reminds me of? Brad Stevens (except the childhood homelessness and poverty).
I think your concerns are valid and we’ll see. Dabo’s coaching tree is a failed Chad Morris and unproven guys - Billy Napier (also Nick Saban tree), Jeff Scott and Brent Venables (also Bob Stoops and Bill Snyder trees).
The common wisdom is that P5 hires of G5 head coaches or P5 coordinators is a 50/50 chance if success. I haven’t really looked into that stat and it also depends on how you define success.
Hires that look good on paper sometimes fail. Bronco’s ACC class was him, Fuente, Richt and Babers. Bronco looked like maybe the worst hire of the group yet he might be the most successful.
Here’s one contemporaneous analysis. https://www.si.com/college/2016/02/11/coaching-hires-grades-kirby-smart-clay-helton
Kirby Smart and Chris Ash both got B+s. Bronco, Richt and Lovie Smith A-s. Fuente, Campbell and Babers As. Sitake a C.
You just made me realize something. That entire ACC class has been wiped out except Babers. Crazy 6 yrs all gone none left an impression on their programs.
“And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was… Dabo, and Clemson followed with him.”. Hard to be successful in these circumstances, just ask all the failed SEC going up against Bama.
But…the accusation that this was a hit on bronco seem increasingly true.
What was George O’Leary’s GPA?
This is a very irresponsible statement JR is far from a clown. He has been covering UVA athletics for 40 plus years and is as well connected from a news reporting standpoint as it gets. No one loves UVA football anymore than JR.
He reported what he heard from very valid sources. Well connected sources according to those who know who the sources are. The hiring was in fact imminent as reported from other outlets as well. Were they relying on JR’s reporting? If so it only confirms the trust they have in JR’s reporting. JR can only report what he is hearing from his source’s. He does not control the outcome. It blew up …
The real clowns were what i heard on Ahmad’s twitter spaces. That was the real clown show.
5.5 i believe I saw on his resume
But Jerry should be experienced enough to know you don’t throw info out there during the negotiations. It puts unnecessary pressure on the school as well as the candidate. Now that it didn’t happen, then stories start flying around about the school not offering enough, the candidate not doing well in the interview, to cover for the fact that sensitive information should have never been public to begin with. While JR might not be THE reason Dex isn’t coach, he certainly didn’t help the situation. Is breaking a scoop more important than waiting 24-48 hours to let the process play out?
His business model changed. He’s looking for subscribers, clicks, readers, Twitter followers. Being first is more important for that than being right. Even the backlash is driving his numbers up.
Not defending him. I think we should just stop talking about him and treating him like a journalist, because he isn’t anymore.
That’s fine. He just needs to not get butt-hurt when he gets called out for being wrong. Whether he wants to own it or not, he’s part of the reason this blew up…it would have been wrong with any candidate, I just hate that it was Dex. He deserves better.
Think you nailed it. JR is trying to keep up with the ESPN style of news breakers which means you get the story first and worry about the sources second. Problem is, he’s still an old school journalist and doesn’t have the thick skin and ability to ignore the negative talk.
Anyone else listen to Ratcliffe and Chris Graham talk on their podcast last night? Jerry couldn’t hide his butt hurt. Dude pouted through the entire half hour. You’d think Tony Elliott kicked his dog or something the way he was talking.
Not really sure why or how he decided that Dex was our can’t miss Nick Saban but he really had himself worked up.
Kinda sad as he was a must read when I was a kid. Would read his Sunday game recaps before hopping over to the comics. I guess it’s true, you either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain.
And then he jumped the gun again for absolutely no reason with his article announcing Tony Elliott as the new coach. Which was also a terrible article with a Boohoo Dex slant. If Tony Elliott isn’t the next coach, what’s he left with?
If it’s not Elliott, he gets to start the cycle again! Which in theory should be good for his numbers, but I suspect would be terrible on him personally. Like was said above, heMs trying to compete in a world he’s not currently psychologically suited for.
you are correct re: Hootie’s experience and love for the program. But he’s beyond past his prime and the work he puts out recently is reflective of clown reporting. he’s territorial, unwilling to consider other viewpoints, and thinks everything still works the way it did when Holland was running the A.D.
also he was let go from the Progress for a reason and it was not budget cuts. Just enough stuff on him that reeks of “old man stuck in the past/unwilling to adapt to the current climate and landscape” (both around the actual job/reporting and interpersonal relationships, things you can/can’t say to people).
Ballhawk is getting a lot of flak on Twitter as well after the Spaces he held on Twitter. I’m listening to the Spotify version of it now. It’s basically an online forum type chatter with some “who’s who” types.
Ballhawk is putting out there that he was just letting people speak freely. I don’t really care and am not offended by it as some Twitter users appear to be. Kind of an embarrassing use of his platform though. And will be interesting to see his relationship with Tony E. as it’s not starting on the right foot…
