This has sorta turned into a bizarre shitshow. I’m generally a solid critic of Carla but this hasn’t been handled terribly on her end (not that it’s been perfect). The media and to a lesser degree the fan base are not handling this well
True, but everyone knows that we’re idiots.
Outside of a potential leak from an interview (which may or may not have happened) It appears the school has played their role well. The wild stories etc. are the product of the media and others not doing their jobs.
Not sure why (1) this would be considered a sh** show, and (2) why that really matters. I’ve found this whole process very fun and the Jerry Ratcliffe mind-blowing article is being submitted to the Pulitzer committee and I assume sometime in the next day or two we will have a new coach, and in 2-3 years we will know if he’s good or not, and I don’t know that the process will matter much, but maybe I’m naïve.
Agree, every one of these for every school is a circus outside the core process.
What was said on there that has people bothered?
A lot of FB alums bitching and moaning about not hiring Dex. Terrible decision, Carla blew it etc etc. Really a bad look from guys that should’ve known better.
I assume these are groh and London era guys? I trust their judgement on what makes a good coach and how to beat VT …
I do think this staff could be more inclusive than the last, but bitching about the hire publicly isn’t going to help that.
Emotions running high from guys with personal relationships with Dex. Of course they want their guy to get the job. We all want what’s best for our friends.
They also completely lack objectivity in this amd their opinions should be factored in accordingly. Never want to alienate your football alumni but also don’t need them group thinking to be a deciding factor in this process.
One guy on Hawk’s Twitter chat last night said, “I’d rather have 10 years with Dex at 6-6 than 1 conference championship with Elliott. Dex is my guy.” And that sentence is all the proof you need that these guys are blinded by bias.
JR was also relevant when they were in school so I’m sure they’ve been eating up all his non-sense
Looks like Board is preparing to fund the ops building anyway. This was in the BOV presentation from last night.
“Dex was gonna get the ops building built!” Seems to have been a BS rallying cry.
If I understand that we don’t even have to take out a bond for that portion. Good work by BOV
Help me out. So 5mm is in and we are dreaming of getting 75 more? (debt)
I read that as pertaining to the Karsh/Batten project. Looks like quasi-endowed funds will be utilized to support athletic projects ($10.3M) and fund the ops center to some degree.
Edit: seeing some clarification on Twitter that the $10.3M is specifically for the ops center.
There are several stages to building the op center or any major building. My guess is that the funds from the BOV are to help the process get started. Probably funds for an architect who will meet with the football coaches, support staff, academic advisors, etc. to see what they need. The architect will then likely propose a few alternatives for Athletics and the BOV to choose from. That allows Carla to tell donors they’ve started on the process of erecting the operations center, have an architect’s plan chosen and thus hopefully entice donors to contribute to the next (expensive) steps. It’s a pretty common process for large buildings.
Absolutely. People LOVE the cool miniature scale models of the planned final building. In several months we’ll start seeing it everywhere.
I agree with so many of the takes on here. Can’t believe that Carla is getting any heat at all on this. Flying all over the country to find qualified candidates, conduct interviews and due diligence in a week after an abrupt resignation from Bronco, and people are upset that she didn’t manage the Twitter universe properly? Good grief. The richest are the complaints from those Twitter media types who created the madness, turned out to be wrong, and then blamed her for not managing the Twitter media types.
I am so disappointed in Hootie. I really still held him as an esteemed journalist. I value his output for being accurate, not being first. I really don’t care who is first to report something. I want accuracy and am willing to wait a day or a week to get it. Part of me thinks an editor at the Daily Progress would have pumped the brakes a little on his tidbits and sources. But if he has thrown himself in with the rest of the faux media that needs clicks and not accuracy, then he deserves whatever fallout comes with it. He’s only as good as his sources, and I understand not revealing them, but now the accuracy is on him. His pouting is juvenile.
Last, I get that Dex’s mates think a lot of him and would like to see him as the head coach. But they have to acknowledge that on paper (and even through references and anecdotes), Elliott’s qualifications are better than Dex’s. To expect Carla to ignore that and the due diligence results and to hire Dex anyway is nothing more than cronyism. Dex has handled this better than anyone else it seems. He has good years and opportunity in his future. And to the credit of many of his mates, most have got it off their chests and now announced they are firmly in support of Virginia football and the new coach.
But this has been a sh*t show of internet-fueled madness that shows an absurd side of sports. If everyone had just gone to the Caribbean for a week and ignored the minute-to-minute saga, everyone would be just fine in the end.
I just want to note that if we do indeed hire Elliott as HC, I’m going to spend the next several years misunderstanding a lot of stuff. On the bright side, I hope to get a few mediocre jokes out of it.
Every time I check twitter, Ratcliffe’s “Breaking” tweet proclaiming Elliot UVA’s next coach is at the top of my timeline. Keeps fooling me. Damn algorithms.
