Is Lanning or any other football factory coordinator who has never worked at a non-football factory going to have any idea how to run a program without the advantage of superior facilities and recruiting staff?
Yeah, even if he’s on the wishlist, we may be outside of our weight class. And on the slim chance he took it, he has no ties to UVa…we’d be a springboard job.
Springboard guy isn’t completely ideal but who wouldn’t want 4 years that are good enough to get our guy a job at a top 10-ish program? Worse things could happen than to get a reputation as a springboard coaching job.
Finding a lifer who can make us a consistent top 25 ain’t easy to say the least.
I’m fine being a spring board program. Plenty of schools have achieved sustained success in the model. Also love the idea of Dex coming in at that point. Be the guy who follows the guy who replaced the guy.
I also don’t think lifers exists anymore or they are rare. Shaw at Stanford or Gundy at okie st may be the closest we see. Riley and Kelly proved even the greenest pastures look out on greener fields.
Exactly. Carla has to call them all, in case the 1 in 100 chance that their wife happens to have always loved C-ville or their kid just moved to Richmond and they want to be there or whatever. Its really unlikely with any one person, and still unlikely over ~20, but the collective chance is high enough that you’re not doing your job if you don’t at least try.
And, you have to try while also recognizing there’s an excellent chance nothing will come of it. That’s how it goes.
Springboard guy is fine with me. Means we won enough that bigger programs want our coach. Hopefully that opens the money faucet to get the master plan going. The guy after that will have a better chance of sustained success.
