🏀 General Summer 2025 Portal/Recruiting

Same trio of coaches there today. Odom Griff Henry. They’ve got primo midcourt seats picked out, probably won’t budge all afternoon. Peach Jam quarterfinals. That’ll probably be it for Odom.

I’m not going to do a live period recap because it would be a big downer until there are new offers to talk about. While there are several current targets that UVA will clearly have a shot with, they’re not in a favorable spot with any of these 2026 recruits. I think the coaches recognize that. There was a lot more evaluating new players than showing up to be seen by old ones this month. But that’s normal, what July is for.

There are 2 groups of recruits at this point. Some that the coaches clearly know they have a shot with, and they showed up regularly to see over these last two weeks. And then another group that the coaches seem to have one foot in, meaning they’re still involved but don’t know yet if they’ll make the short list.

In the running (two feet)

Billy White III-Scheduled to visit Aug 30
Bo Ogden-Scheduled to visit Sept 25
Latrell Allmond-Said he’ll visit, no date set
Cole Cloer-Has UVA in his final 8

Still trying (one foot)

Dylan Mingo-missed Peach Jam,said he plans to visit
Junior County-said he’ll name finalists next week
Lucas Morillo
Bryson Howard
Cody Peck
Davion Atkins

Doubtful

Christian Gibson-No UVA presence in a total reversal from last month.
William Stevens-Could his strong July lead to UVA re-engaging? No sign of it
Luca Foster-I don’t think UVA is in it but since he missed Peach Jam, uncertain.
Fred Smith-UVA did not pay much attention to the UAA circuit, so probably not.
Jordan Smith-Maybe there’s a slim chance they get a visit but Odom seems to have conceded.
Jayden Hodge-Another ignored Under Armour recruit.

Gone

Deron Rippey (cut UVA from his list), Trey Thompson (committed to Iowa), Cameron Holmes, Arafan Diane

I expect we’ll see quite a few new offers flow out in the coming days, to players at Peach Jam and some the coaches have been sitting on from Adidas last week. As usual, the recruiting board will look very different when July’s dust settles. It’ll take a little time for it all to get sorted out. Things quiet down for the next month or so, most of it is a dead period. During that time, recruits will name finalists and get their fall visits scheduled.

Where do we stack up on Billy White III? The other 3 “both feet in” seem like extreme long shots at this point, even with potential visits lined up.

A good chance our 2026 class comes from the next wave of offers out of the July Period.

I also think we can get Cody Peck.

Edit: and secretly hoping for a Gibson reversal reversal

I think it’s pretty open

The question with him is will they keep going for him. Plus a big man is the lowest spot on the list, most likely to get skipped. They need guards, a couple of them, followed by a wing forward. From their standpoint, it may not be worth taking a big man unless he’s an immediate contributor. He’d need to at least be worth what they’d be missing in a 2027 recruit.

What if Cody Peck is the wing forward :eyes:

Curiously watching to see if Brownell actually plays Wahlin at the 3 against us in OOC.

I hope he does, I think we will eat them up with our perimeter speed if that’s the case. He could do it with Hunter Tyson, but Wahlin ain’t Hunter Tyson, at least hasn’t shone it yet. But they did seem to forget to recruit people who can dribble.

They left Matt Henry behind to hold down the rest of the weekend.

Quentin Coleman is the one guy I assume comes away with a new offer.

Is this a bad time to bring back up that we didn’t land anyone during the transfer cycle without outbidding the competition?

They have to win before they’re landing anyone who is sought after by the bigger programs. Same as it was for Tony

Didn’t seem to be a problem for McCollum at Iowa who just went out and snagged someone from Purdue

Zero hand-wringing from me. Not my money (at least not most of it). Love the look of the roster this year. There’s always the portal again for next, and proof of concept should start to help long term if there is a concept to be proven (which I think there is).

To me, this feels like an incredibly low stakes HS recruiting cycle.

Right now you’re paying to prove it works.

Next year you’ll be paying to reload.

Future years there should be incentive to come in addition to money or else something has gone poorly.

I’m not overly concerned about it…yet at the same time long term building (mostly HS recruiting) always was my concern about Odom.

He’s had the job for 3 months…recruiting up until this point is as much about what you’ve did last fall. There’s basically two types of recruits, the guys who are popular from the start and then the ones that emerge over the summer. Odom has been at a major disadvantage with the first group. Plus, the little we’re seeing from him…I think his way plays into that long game, meaning he needs a full cycle to be fully effective.

Same time…He hasn’t built an elite team yet, that was the wart on his resume. It’s been quick patch jobs leading to quick turnarounds, being good but not great. Of course winning and hopefully getting a couple guys to the NBA would help but recruiting at his level for most teams is mostly about identifying the right players, staking your claim, taking chances. Time will tell if Odom is good at that.

Fair. I think time was always going to be the answer here. The future outlook at this point is all based on what he’s done in the past and assumptions around what he can do with more resources… so, IMO, you’re going to have to be willing to use those resources aggressively at least over the next offseason or two to make the case that playing for us is more than just taking the best market offer in a major conference.

Impossible to prove that case until you showcase it on the court in the colors. But once you do, then maybe you can just make competitive offers and win more tiebreakers.

Take this with a grain of salt because I feel like HS recruiting is much less essential now given the wide variety of ways to acquire talent - but I won’t be concerned about that avenue until we’ve proven to be good and still underwhelming there.
