IMac is definitely a better nickname than Mick
A red shirt year, another year to learn against actual competition and to get a defense that actually is rocket science, and by golly, in his third year in the program at the age of 21, heāll be ready. For college basketball.
Honestly, from the press conference, Iām not sure Tony is 100% sold on redshirting either Traudt or Bond. Says they both could help this year and then tacks on the bit about taking it a month at a time.
Iām assuming people here are anxious because the Traudt redshirt went against the preseason narrative regarding how ready he is and the excitement from his shooting performance at the B/W scrimmage. But thereās obviously more to it than what we hear, and maybe we should have read more into his 5 fouls in the scrimmage and his defensive struggles.
Iām definitely a Pollyanna regarding this type of thing and assume the coaches and Traudt know best. So Iām gonna go with the conclusion that he wouldnāt have added much beyond what weāll get from BVP this year, and heāll emerge from his redshirt year on a Brogdon, Hunter trajectory.
Thatās the thing though. Tony said he was going to play vs Monmouth. And that all of the first years can help us a lot this year.
But yeah Im not sweating too much the redshirt. We can go small ball with BVP and Dunn
I assume this idea didnāt suddenly come to Traudt in a dream after the NCCU game. However it seems weird to me that if he was considering a redshirt, he didnāt say anything until after the first game (which we were favored by 23 points). It would have seemed pretty likely that heād get some minutes in a blowout which would take the redshirt off the table.
Maybe he got word that Dunn was ahead of him and the only minutes available to him would be after whatever Dunn gets. Seems really odd to me unless Traudt is a big critic of his own game and just doesnāt think heās ready
Agree on the iMac nickname. More clever than Mick and not a pejorative term for someone from Ireland.
Iām just going to point out - I donāt believe weāve ever had a guy transfer after a redshirt year. Dre got close, but didnāt pull the trigger. Guys whoāve transferred generally played, but played less than they thought or didnāt like the system fit. Iām still not at all worried about Traudt transferring unless we hear something about him being desperately homesick.
And yeah, itās not ideal, but we also saw what he can do in the scrimmage and Italy. Dude is still going to be a beast. He didnāt suddenly become a worse basketball player. Heās just taking a slightly different path. And weāll see if that even lasts the season.
Regarding Traudt playing against Monmouth, my interpretation of Tonyās statement was that āobviously, everyone got to play tonight, so he would have gotten inā, not necessarily that he was specifically part of the plan going into the game. I might have to relisten to that though.
What do all these plays have in common? Ryan Dunn
Everyone has to find their own path and this appears to be Traudts. I believe CTB when he says it was Traudts decision and maybe he has to go on his own journey to become great.
Next year we will have two line ups
Reece Gertrude Bond Dunn Kadin = the āyou will not score on usā defense.
6th year Kihei, insert whoever we add at guard here if not Armaan, McKneely, Taine, Traudt = the āGood luck trying to defend the floor spacingā lineup.
Only thought from me on the RS: Tony seems to have changed his messaging around it, emphasizing that itās a month by month decision, etc. We shall see how that plays out. The longer it goes on, of course, the greater perception the harm of āburningā it.
Does that mean a player can break the redshirt at any time?
Yes⦠remember Joy Baker? K burned his red shirt after 26 gamesā¦
Thanks!
I donāt think redshirting Traudt is a good by any means. The best we can hope for is that everyone forgets because we have a good season and NCAAT run.
Early results seem to indicate the offense runs better with a floor spacer on the field at the 4. BVP took that role and Gardner will get more minutes than he should. Would have been nice to see Traudt.
Think you answered the question why? Gardner is getting his minutes and BvP is playing very well early on. Just not many minutes available, particularly if Dunn plays small ball 4 with Shed, Reece, Armaan and iMac. Pleasantly surprised at how well Shed moves and guards smaller players.
Iām not too concerned about Traudtās decision, but the timing of it mystifies me. Why do this AFTER the first game (which could have been a blowout, in which case he would have played, burning the redshirt) rather than before? Did some new info trigger the decision (the fact that he didnāt play?), or was he just kinda slow to make up his mind?
