Hoos Football Season 2022: A New Era

2 trains and one bus for one last Jersey pool day with my little one and my folks. Then the reverse. Kept up with the game on LRA. More fun!

Beer wins. Beer puts Father Time on the crapper the next morning and Father Time waives the white flag.

When you come to the Atl I’ll give you a proper Bourbon experience

I got a birds eye view of the Weehawken HS football game for like 10 minutes snaking around the helix to get on the tunnel. We are gonna stay put, but thanks for the offer!

Looking at the schedule, I don’t see 4 75%+ probability wins to get bowl eligible. Gotta get @GT. Then in order of likelihood maybe @Duke, CCU, UL, @Cuse, @VT, UNC, Pitt, Miami.

If we don’t win Friday night, good chance we’re going into VT needing a win to make a bowl.

If we’re 6-1 going into Miami and end up 6-6 will you be more or less disappointed than if we were 4-7 going into VT and then beating them (but obviously missing a bowl game).

I’ll still take 5-7 with a win over VT rather than a 6-6 bowl season but by a much narrower margin than I would have a few years ago.

Man you are breaking out the difficult questions today. Legit changed my answered 3 times while typing it.

I feel like last years or maybe one or more of the previous season suffered similar fates of strong starts and then wobbly finishes before the inevitable collapse against VT. The scenario of going 6-6 with a losing streak at the end may not be as bad as advertised because honestly this team isn’t really built for major success at this moment, but the 6-1 start means they are essentially taking care of business against the programs they should beat and that’s a symbol of growth and a necessity for a growing program.

Beating Va Tech while going 5-7 certainly takes the sting out of the year the question comes down to what were those other 2 wins? Any combo of GT/Cuse/Duke and I’m a bit leery.

Edit: I would change my mind if there are actual stakes attached to the Va Teach Game. For instance if Tech was in line for a shot at the ACC or a CFP spot, then I’d be okay with the 5-7 record if it means the Hoos cost them a championship opportunity. As it stands, it looks more like two 4-7 teams coming together.

This is what I was talking about with the Anae play design in the game thread. Guy’s been doing it for a long time and is pretty good at using motion and little tricks to get guys open. What he sometimes does is outsmart himself by anticipating defensive adjustments that don’t happen.

Anyway, I was watching some play analysis of our offense last year and one situation I remember them talking about was a trips look. Say you’ve got Woods KT and Wicks in the right. You know the defense is playing man and through scouting they have the CB take the outside guy, a safety taking the middle guy and an OLB on the inside guy (usually the TE). So you put KT in short motion and snap the ball when he’s right behind Woods. If the LB and safety are communicating well, the LB should switch into KT and the safety switches onto Woods. Chances are college defenders are not that good and both will follow the same guy leaving the other one wide open. That’s a super simplified example, but it gives the idea of what goes into play design. If this isn’t something Des has done much of before, Coach E really needs to have a heavier role with the offense.

It usually isn’t this clear and easy or anyone could be a play designer. I’ve read that the new Dolphins HC was the real brains behind the SF play designs (not necessarily the play calling though).

Nailed on something thing and not sure how I missed it with Anae. He is a great play designer. And it is an artform to create motions that put defenses into compromised positions. I also find a beauty to watching an offense use movement etc to create miss matches and opportunities. But Anae’s downfall is he is not a great play caller. The OT to OT play isn’t the worst designed play in the world (although it’s close) but calling it on 3rd and long from the 17 in the final moments of the 4th is about as poor game management as I’ve seen.

It’s why you need wisdom AND knowledge. The knowledge gives you the know how and the ideas, the wisdom allows you to deploy them appropriately

I totally don’t have time for this, but I’m biting and going down the rabbit hole. I wonder if one of the reasons we are seeing BA struggle this year is a change in responsibilities. Air raid offenses or gimmicked offenses like Anae and the Hoos ran last year often leave a QB with 1 maybe 2 reads to make. All that pre-snap motion is designed to get 1 person open and if that person isn’t there, there’s maybe 1 other hot route and then it’s on the QB to scramble/improvise.

With Elliott’s new pro-system (yes it appears to have some shortcomings) but it’s a system that relies on QB intelligence and making quick assessments. I know Clemson would often run 3 or even 4 options on the passing tree when you add in the back. That’s a lot to process especially if you’re not accustomed to it. Add in running true PA where the QB’s back may be to the line of scrimmage for a moment and you have a ton of information crashing in in a short amount of time.

Much like the Air Raid this breaking down of coverage etc. looks amazing when the QB is comfortable and can do it quickly. But if they aren’t comfortable and able to trust their instincts and the QB has to think their way through the progressions rather than react then it gets hiccups and slowness and suddenly there’s hesitation in the throws and accuracy are off.

Not sure if all of that is happening or true, will need to do some film analysis to compare. But the narrative does make sense and is honestly a common, and one of the big knocks on the Air Raid qb’s in college.

Agreed that it was a bad call, but it was 3rd and 8 at the 9, not 3rd and long from the 17.

Any advantage to us knowing Anae’s playbook / offense fairly well? Seems like Hagans/2J should be able to know pretty well what’s coming. I’d really like to beat Cuse because I’ve always got the impression that guy was kind of a jerk.
